The subject of the sketch is a brother of our fellow townsman, Mr. Walter C. Harllee, and the people of this community, many of whem remember him well, will be glad to know that be has achieved success in his faraway home, Silver City, New Mexico. “Arthur Howard Harllee, one of Silver City’s lesding lawyers, is a native of Marion county, South Carolina. He is descended from Colomai stock, his great grand father, Peter Harllee, a retired Captain ot the English navy, hav ing founded the family in Ameri ca in 1758. Mr. Harllee was edu cated at Wofford College, Spartan burg, South Carolina, and after graduating engaged for a time in teaching school. Wh'le teaching he studied law with his uncle, General W. W. Harllee, of Marion, and in 1884 entered the Albany Law School at Albany, New York. “Shortly after graduating Mr. Harllee came^to New Mexico and located at Silver City, where he has since resided, engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1895 he was appointed by Gov ernor Thornton, district attorney for Grant and Sierra couutiea, a position which he still fills with credit to himself and the admin istration.’* LOWER TOBACCO RATES. The Atlantic Coast Line Henda la a Rc- «>ed Tnrlfl. Borne time ago the railroad oom- misaion took up with thediffeient railroads traversing the State the matter of the equalization of the ratea on tobacco, or, in other words, the placing of rates on the same basis with those accorded the tohaoco raising States. Sobth Carolina having of late oome into some prominence through its efforts in the cultiva tion of tobacco, the com mission suggested to the railroads that the rate equalization could be ef fected without recourse to arbi trary measures being taken, and all the roads assented to this proposition without demur. The Atlantic Coast Line ia the first road, however to send in a re vised tariff of rates of freight on leaf tobacco prized (released) in hogsheads and tierces. This tariff was received by the commission yesterday, and the reduction made may be readily semi when it is stated that the rate ou a five mile or under haul, which was formerly 12 cents per hundred pounds, is now placed at 7 cents, with rates in the same ratio of reduction for longer hauls. This will be good news to the tobacco growers of this section, »nd will iutpire them with new courage iu their endeavors to pro mote a growing indmtry.—Co lumbia Register. MTATK OF SOUTH CAROLINA. I will sell at public auction, to the highest bid der, on Monday the 1st day of March, 1897, during the usual hours of sale, before the court house door in the city of Florence, State and coun ty aforesaid, the following real es tate to wit: All that certain piece, parcel or tract of land, known as R. K. Matthews’ in terest in the estate of Gordon Mat thews. lying, being and situate in the county of Florence and State of South Carolina containing fifteen (15) acres more or less—bounded and described as follows, viz; north by lands of J. H. Matthews or J. A.Coward, east by es tate of Gordon Matthews or Mariah An derson’s interest in said estate, south by Horse Branch or lands of George W. Anderson and F. Ulrich and west by lands of J. II. Matthews.” ALSO All my interest in that certain tractor parcel of land (my interest beingone un divided half thereof) lying, being and situate in the .State of South Carolina and county of Florence, being part of a tract of land bounded as follows, that is to say, on the north by Long Branch or the lands «f John Mat thews, Jr., on the east by lands of Jacob Miles, on the south by lands of ,and on the west by lands of Dunham Matthews, containing fifty-eight 'acres and a half, reference to a plat made by Samuel Tomlinson, D. D. in 1883, Oct. 5th being had said boundaries will more fully ap pear. ALSO A certain tract, or parcel of land, situate and bounded as follows, viz: On the north by lands of Angus Mat thews, my son, east by lands of Isham Hinson, south by lands of Isham Hin son, west by lands of Isham Hinson. The above described land is also bound- «d oif the north by a ditch, known as the northern boundary, and on the east by the Northeastern Railroad. The said land is said to contain five (5) acres, more or lesa. ALSO All thatcertain piece, parcel or tract of land lying, being and situate in county of Florence and State of South Carolina, containing one hundred and forty (140) acres more or less, described and bounded as follows, viz.: north by lands of Peter Burton, and S. M. Benton, east by lands of George W. Matthews, south by the public road leading from the George town road to the Charleston road, and west by lands of W. J. Fitzean and A. J. Fowler or Elijah Pickett. ALSO All that certain tract and parcel of land lying, being and situate in the county of Florence in the State of South Carolina, containing forty (40) acres more or less and bounded and butting as follows, that is to say, on the north by lands of Madge Matt hews, on the east by lands of Jacob Miller, on the south by lands of Isham Hinson, and on the west by the right of way of the Northeastern railroad. ALSO, All that tract of land lying on Lynches river, in county and State aforesaid, containing two (2) acres, Miore or less, and bounded as follows: On the north by lands now or formerly belonging to J. C. lynch, and known as the J. C. Blackwell land, on the east by lands of G. M. Ham and Gideon Fer rell, on the south by Bay Branch and Lynches river, aad on the west by lands of J.C. Lynch also known as the J. C. Blackwell lands. Terms of sale, one-third cash, balance in one and two years, secured by bond of the purchaser and mortgage of the premises, bearing interest at the rate of 7 per cent, per annum, with privi lege of paying all cash.
