Miss Mary J. Cooper died at 11 o’clock this morning at her home in this city, after an illness of two weeks with pneumonia. Miss Cooper was a lady Christian character missed in the circles in which she was an active religious worker. The funeral services will be held in the Presbyterian Church at 3 o’clock i to-morrow afternoon. — Sumter Item. * Miss Cooper is a sister of Mr. S. B. Governor Ellerbt has pardoned John D. Jolly, of Florence county, who received a five-year sentence for assault with iutent to murder. The people of the county remem ber the case well. Mr. Turner was shot from ambush, and Jolly was indicted, tried, convicted and sent up. The judge and solicitor i* commended the pardon, and the chief witness in the case has since the trial acknowledged that he swore falsely. • Contractor W. J. Wilkins is putting up a building on the site of ftie prize house, which was burned some months ago, for his woodworking factory. Mr. W. D. Mott, of Lucile, one of our old subscribers, paid us a pleasant call today. Mr. Mott has been quite ill with La Grippe, but we are glad to see him out again. Messrs. Roach, against whom the grand jury at the last term of court found a true 'bill and or dered an indictment. R Ivet. be made later. All efforts made by newspaper correspondents to board the war ships off Charleston bar to-day were futile. The Fern came up to the city for mail and provisions and the Marblehead was lying off the battery, but the ships were strung out to sea beyond the jet ties for a distance of eight miles ; the Cruiser Columbia, which is furthest out, is from 16 to 18 miles from the city. Early this morning some signaling w'as done from the flagship New York and in conse quence the-ships began to move fr mi the north to the south of the lurbor. n The battleship Mdhic anchored a little to the south of the lightship, which stands, just 6 miles out from Fort Sumter. The Fern lies behind the Maine, the New York is half a mile further south. Half way across the main channel is the monitor Amphitrite and beyond her and out to sea is the Columbia. It is supposed here that the ships have taken those stations with a view to effec tually guarding the south entrance to the harbor and that future ar rivals, the Indiana and Massachu setts, for instance, will be. placed to the north. The Dolphin was nowhere in evidence to-day, and it is believed that she has sailed south, possibly to relieve the New ark at the mouth of St. John’s river. The battleships Indiana and Massachusetts are expected to ar rive off the bar to morrow morn ing. It is known that the Vesu vius lias been cyrdered away from League Island and as she is to be the blockade runner, it is thought that she will come down the coast under her own orders, after all the big ships are in position and try to run into the harbor undetected. This is supposition, but it is at least possible and probable. Every effort has been made by press representatives to get some detail ed statement of the injuries done the ships during the storm, but it has been of no avail. The Marble head, when up to the city, gave little evidence of injury ; her sup erstructure was battered somewhat but as one stood upon her deck, she looked little the worse for wear. Mr. Me White made another fight to have his Florence magis trate bill considered by the house. After much talk Mr. Garris, who was in the chair, held that the new rule used the term “resolu tion” instead of “bill” in referring to the matter, and there was a difference. Dr. Wyche appealed from the decision of the chair. The house sustained the speaker, end thus the intention of the new rule was defeated, tbe gates being opened once more f< r the consid eration of local bills as to magis- » trates and polling precincts. At tbe night session of the sen ate the anti trust bill was called up for a third reading and Mr. Henderson had stricken out his amendment excepting the disp.-n sarv, in place of which he offered an amendment to read: “Nothing in tins act shall be construed to apply to any person or persons acting in the discharge of official duties under the laws of this State.” This was accepted and the bill ordered to a third reading. Mayfield, Moses and Hen derson on the ground that it was special legislation, and as such was unconstitutional. Messrs. Pettigrew, Ragsdale, Dennis and Brown championed the measure.
