The Emma Warren Company will open their week’s engage ment in the Opera house to-night with “Kathleen.” There w^re no tramps up before the mayor this morning. The re cent action of the mayor must have frightened them from our midst. If so, good. There is more sickness in our community now than there has been for a number of years. The prevalent epidemic La Grippe leaves scarcely any one untouched. Captain Frank Welsh, of the Bishopville branch of the M dr A- R. R., is in the city. Captain Welsh was for some years a resi dent of Florence and wo are al ways glad o see him. Magician Powell, who performed here Wednesday and Thursday nights of last week, spent last night at the Centra'. He will ap pear in Darlington to-night and to-morrow to-night. B. Rollins would open a furniture store in Florence. Their furni ture w as delayed and they were not able to open their store on tho day mentioned. This morning th-ir doors were thrown open. Though their entire stock has no: yet arnved, they are now rea iy to begin basiness. Their regular ad vertisement will appear in a few days. Both of these gentlemen are citizens of Florence 1 nd deserve their sha e of the’patronage of the people of our city. A Premature trike. The Basket and Crate Factory suffered a strike Friday at noon. The young men, who had been making baskets for the lengthy period of three davs, decided tha; ten cents a hundred was not suffi cient pay and accordingly created a strike. A petition, demanding higher wages, was written an 1 signed by the employees. Mr. W. N. Allebrand, the proprietor of the factory, informed them that they could either work at his rates or stop, just as they liked. All, with maybe one or two exceptions, are at work again. A Cold Wave. A telegram was received here yesterday to the effect that the thermometer would fall from 15 to 30 degrees this morning or to night. To-day’s weather report states that there will be rain or snow this afternoon or to-night and that there will be several days of continued cold weather. At 7 o’clock this morning the ther mometer registered 32 degrees, at 12 o’clock 36 degrees, and from all indica ions it will fall lower to night. A Small Fir*. Yesterday morning about 12.30 o’clock the residence of Mr. W. morning on account of the absence H. Cannon on the corner of Coit of Judge Earle. A telegram was received from him stating that he would arrive to-night and that court would convene at 9.30 o’clock to-morrow morning. Monthly Me.tiag, and Cheeves street caught fire and suffered slight damage. The fire originated from the chimney. Four or five dollars will cover all loss sustained by Mr. Cannon. Suffering of Poor is Terrible in Chicago — Mercury Ranging From Zero to 40 Below and Growing Colder. Chicago, Jan. 24.—The cold wave which reached Chicago last night tightened its grip to-day and. at midnight Chicagoans were shiv ering in a 16 below zero atmos phere. At 8 o’clock this morning the thermometer registered 14 be low-. The temperature then mod erated somewhat, but at no time during the day did the mere uv rise above 3 below. Shortly after sunset the temperature began dfrpping rapidly and to-night promises to be a record breaker. The w eather bureau promises no relief for four or five days. The suffering among the poor is in tense and to-morrow morning Mayor Swift will issue a proclama tion calling for bread for the starv ing. St. Paul, Minn., Jan. 24 To night’s reports from every part of the northwest indicated last night was the coldest night in two win ters. At St. Paul, about the warmest point in this whole sec tion, the thermometer registered 25 below. The range was from that figure to 30 below at St. Cloud, 36 below at Aiken and 40 below at St. Hilare. There are no reports in yet of people freezing to death, though suff-ring in the country must have been very! jreat. The St. Paul relief society ha^ been busy all day furnishing doai and other supplies to the needy. The thermometer in this city to-night is 26 below zero, and indications poin- to a further drop of at least ten degrees before morn ing. Fort Wayne, Ind., Jan. 24.— This has been the coldest day of the winter.
