With tftMple aad IwprtMlva Oaremooiea fie U ladaeted Into Offlee. It is now sX'Qovernor Krans and hsrsafter it will be Governor lllsrbe. The interesting exercises which brought about this change in the head of the State govern- nent occurred yesterday at 12 o’clock, with simple but impress its oeretronies. There was a pro cession of judges and State ofllcers into the hall of the house, accom panied by the faculty and students of the South Carolina College, the oath of office administered, an in augural address and the change was made. Every seat in the gallery was taken long before the ceremonies began, and back of them were the fair daughters of the city and State who had to stand. On the ioor of the house the aisles were packed with people, ladies pre dominating, the crowd being so large that the Senators had in a large majority to stand. It was the largest crowd seen at any in auguration since 1876 excepting those present at the ceremonies which inducted Governors Hamp ton and Tillman into office, a oir- camstaoce which shows the new governor’s popularity with all of the people and an omen of that union of the people for the com mon upbuilding of their common State which has been the desire of all good citizens for some years. The hoase met at 1130 o’clock and was in the midst of a transac tion of regular business, when a a message from the Senate was read announcing its acceptance of the invitation to be present at the inaugural ceremonies. Soon after the announcement of the message the Senate appeared, being duly announced by the Ser- geant at Arms of the house. Lieu tenant Governor Timmerman and Clerk Hemphill headed the pro cession, and took seats on the Speaker’s rostrum while the Sena tors secured seats where possible or stood as the* circumstances re- ■ i quired. Before they eame in, however, the South Carolina College stu dents appeared in the hall and lined themselves around the aisles, which enclosed the members Naturally they left off thi college yell, though some people thought they might give it when in the midst of their procession the col lege flag was borne aloft. It was carried by theyouuglady students of the college, the color bearer in this instance being Miss Gibbes, of this city, a daughter of Major Wade Hampton Gibbes. The executive procession fol lowed the students, and as soon as all were seated, Rev. W. E. Evans delivsred a beautiful prayer. Then Governor-elect Ellerbe was sworn in, the oath of office being admix istered by Chief Justice Henry Me- Tfr. When the governor concluded his inaugural address, Lieut.-Gov- fleet McSweeney was sworn in. He •poke briefly, expressing his thanks for the honor conferred, and then Lieut.-Goveruor Timmer man dissolved the assembly. of the Kansas, Oklahoma Central ; and Southwestern railway through the Indian Territory and Okla homa; amending the patent laws along the lines proposed by the Amerian Bar association ; to give to the United States the benefit of devices patented by naval officers; authorizing the construction of a bridge across the Rio Grande at El Paso, Tex. An order was agreed to setting aside to-morrow’s session for the consideration of private pension bills. Mr. McCall of Massachu setts gave notice that be would call up the Yost-Tuck».r election case Wednesday. STATE OF SOUTH C COUNTY OK PLORKI C. G.
