The conference which had been
in session in this city sines the
16th iust. Hosed on Wednesday
night. Bishop Embry, who pre
sided, preached a powerful sermon
Tuesday morning and ordained
four young men. The conference
spssiou was pleasant throughout.
It is said that this conference
raised more money for Allen Uni-
VFrsity than either of the other
two conferences of the State. Be
fore the adjournment on Wednes
day night Bishop Embry read th<
appointments. There were man)
important changes. Revs. Wm.
Thomas, W. D Chappelle, S F.
Flegler and J. G. Sampson, presid
ing elders, have been returned to
their several districts. Rev. A. W.
Heyward, who was presiding elder
of the Marion district, has been
sent to Fort Motte ci r cuit. Rev
C. Pierce Neison has been trans
ferred from the Columbia confer
ence and appointed presiding eider
of tlie Marion district; Rev. D. A.
I jjfciiBfiiKii #o 'rtnIlia
Rev. D. A. Christie has been trans
ferred and sent to Pendleton. Rev.
A. J. Hunter goes to Sumter; Rev.
P. E Pompey to Manning. Rev.
Samuel Washington transferred
from the Charleston couterence
and sent to Marion. R«v. J P.
Allston goes to Darlington. Rev.
T. J Walker is sent to Florence.
Rev D. H Bowen has b*-sn trans
ferred to the Columbia conference
and stationed at Bethel church,
Columbia. The members of the
church here regret very much to
give ip Rev. Bowen. He served
them faithfully for three yean,
finithed the church building—now
ouo of the prettiest in town,—re
duced their indebtedness and
greatly increased the membership.
He goes to Columbia with an uu
tarnished reputation and carries
with him the best wishes of the
citizens of Florence, both white
and colored. If he contin
ues to be as successful in bis new
held as he has been in the past,
we may expect for him a higher
position in his church in the near
future.

The most pitiful sight within the
memory of the people of Florence
was presented at the pas a enger de
pot Wednesday night. A poor widow
er carrying in his arms a dead baby
wrapped in a shawl and three small
children, one a little barefooted boy
about five years, and the other two
little girls about two and three years,
old respectively, got oft' the Char-
leston train. This gentleman gave
his name as Gribb and said he was
traveling from Coffee county, Ga.,
to Columbus county, N. C:, his old
home. He lost his wife two weeks
ago in Georgia. His six months
old baby was taken sick soon after
and died yesterday in his arms

Monday Dr. MacBride, the Now
