The annual report of the Secre- retary of the Interior, which hasjust been submitted to the president, contains much interesting informa tion. It sets fortli the following facts: The actual public domain is now 1,849,082,587 acres. Of this 600,000 acres, not including Alaska, still lie vacant. About $ 140,000,000 per annum is being drawn in pensions, and this vast sum is distributed among about 970,678 persons. A table is given showing “that the total amount paid out by the government in pensions and the cost of distribut ing the same during the last thirty- one years was $2,034,817,769, which lacks only $346,712,525 of being equal to the high watermark of the interest bearing public debt.” The Indians occupy about 85,000,- 000 acres of land. No woik has been done on the Nicaragua canal since August, 1893. “The Central Pacific Railroad is in default to the Government, or unquestionably will be on January 1 next, when $2,432,000 additional of its indebtedness, together with thirty years’ interest thereon, will fall due and must be redeemed by the Government. On January 1, 1897, $6,460,000 additional bonds of Union Pacific will mature, interest on same— $11,952,000—will be then due, and if not paid the Union Pacific will unquestionably be in default.” Accordingly the secretary has declined to patent lands to these two roads except where the lands for which patents are asked have been sold to bona fide purchasers. The report furthermore contains valuable suggestions and several wholesome recommendations. As the secretary says, it is desirable that our waste acreage should be taken up by actual settlers, and it is of the utmost importance that there should be legislation for the preservation of our forests. \Vc note with satisfaction that he urges such legislation, and hope that Congress will take the matter up. With reference to the Indians, the secretary says that they should be protected from the sinister machinations of unscrupulous men. Of course they should. In time past the Indians have been imposed upon by unscrupulous men, and, as unscrupulous men will in all probability continue their foul work where possible, it is the duty of the government to take a hand in the game. When schemers and tricksters find their schemes and tricks constantly “nipped in the bud,” they will cease their operations, and the Red man will be left to pursue the •ren tenor of his way. The report contains much that we (cannot give. Its full text Would prove interesting reading to all our people simply because it treats of the “Interior” and be cause this branch of the govern ment is growing in importance along with the growth of our coautry. When most needed it is not un usual for our family physician to be away from home. Such was the experience of Mr. J. Y. Schenck, editor of the Caddo, Ind. Ter., Banner, when his little girl, two years of age was threatened with a severe attack of croup. Here is an illustration of the way the wind handled things during the big St. Louis tornado. This bicycle, owned in East St. Louis, was struck by three barrels of syrup, a tierce of lard and one barrel of vinegar. Absolutely the only uninjured parts are the saddle and the Morgan & Wright quick- repair tires, which were full of air when the machine was found Even if these tires had been punctured, unless severely torn, any one of the holes could have been repaired by the quick-repair device in them, without trouble. Riders of these tires, when they have a puncture, need only be cart ful to pump as much air as possible into the tire before insert ing the quick-repair tool.
