il ■( 1 ■ I Florence Daily Times. PesbifgiD Evkby Aftebnook Ex cept Sunday. DiRR A BRUHSOK, Proprietors. The grangers are willing to help Mr. McKinley construct his cabi net. It is stated that President Cleve land will make his permanent res idence at Princeton, N. J. Weyler, the doughty Spanish warrior, has leit Havana again, thif time intending to break up Maceo's arjny before he returns. Maceo is watchful and wary, and in all probability will make the Spaniard feel very tired. A leading Republican paper thiuka that ex-Presideut Harrison would compromise hia dignity to aocept a position under the Mc Kinley administration. This is foolish. The fact that he, a citi- sen of the United States, has oc cupied the presidential chair does not place him above his fellows. It oompromises the dignity of no man to accept an honorable of fice. Mr. Bryan in his recent speech at Denver said, “It is my earnest desire that my name cease to be connected with the clubs that are organized to continue this work. When the time comes, conditions may produce some one else." In this he is unselfish, though exact ly right. While Mr. Bryan has impressed himself upon the coun try, he knows, as we ail know, that there is no telling what the times may bring forth. terrific north wind blowing. At Morehead, Minn., the bliz zard 1. ' lasted twenty-four hours, and there is no prospect of abate ment. Traffic in the streets and all business is suspended. Nearly all passenger and freight trains are snowed in, but the Northern Paci fic managed to move one passen ger train to. night. A north-bound on the Great Northern reached Morehead an hour late this morn ing. It stalled in the big drift right at the depot and had to be dug out. It took four powerful engines to take the four passenger coaches across the river to Fargo. The trains are unprovided with snow ploughs, which render the engines almost helpless. The snow in some places is five feet deep. Grafton, N. D., reports the worst storm that ever visited that section and it is driving the blind ing snow at a terrific rate across the prairies. It began Wednes day evening. The Great North ern south-bound train, due here at 6.30 last night, is now at St. Thomas, fourteen miles north of Grafton. One of the engines reached here this afternoon, com ing down for coal. The north-bound Northern Pa cific train got as far as Pembina last night and the south-bound to Meckinok. A train load of cattle is reported stuck in a drift near Church’s Fer ry, and frozen to death. Argyle, Minn, reports drifts in the streets there as high as the buildings alongside. Mail and freight trains are tied up. The storm shows no signs of abat ing. The mercury of Fergus Falls, Minn., is at zero and business is suspended. CHURCHES & SOCIETIES Ei'IHCOHAL CSUBCH. There are tripli cate certificates of the result of this vote. One copy is sent to the President of the United States Senate; a second is delivered to that officer in person by one of the electors selected by lot, while the third is deposited with the United States Judge of the district in which the electors meet. Then comes another breathing •pell, and at last, on the second Wednesday in February both houses meet in joint session in the hall of the House. This session is presided over by the President of the Senate, and in the presence of the members the certificates from the various States are opened and the vote of the electors made known. The Pxeeident of the Senate will than declare McKinley and Hobart elected President and Vice-Preaident of the United States.” After this all will be quiet until the fourth day of March when the president and vios-presideut will be formally installed into of fice. » igiJUi — ; BLIZZARD IN THE NORTHWEST. The old dream of recovering the gold held in solution in the waters of the sea is again revived. The gold is there, without doubt; it ranges from a half-grain to a grain per ton of sea-water. That is a very minute quantity but figure on that basis, and the results are startling. A cubic mile of the ocean has from 130 to 260 tons of pure gold in it—that is to say, 165,000,000,000 to $130,000.- 000,000 worth. As there are from 300 to 400 million cubic miles of water in the seas, there is, at the lowest estimate of a half-grain per ton, $35,000,000,000,000,000 of gold in the sea ! This is a million times the entire wealth of the United States, and in fact the wealth of the world is insignificant beside it. But how to gather these riches of the sea— that is the question ! The problem is a grand one, but who shall say it is too great for modern science to grapple with ?
