WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THK SOUTH One of the notable features iu connection with the business re vival which has followed the elec tiou is the renewed interest about the South manifested by the Northern press. As an evidence of this, a syndicate of newspapers has sent one of the best known write's and journalists in the country—Frank G. Carpenter—on a t“ur of the South * * * UoUeice Uutri«-u'uiii». From tbe CI»a p le«toB I’oat. As a rule a college should not ^ lower its standard in order to in- j crease its roll of students. College standards in the South are in rart- cases too high. The general pol icy should be to elevate the stan dards and our Southern institu tions have for the most part far to go in an ascending direction. It is impracticable to successfully raise college standards in the South, however, by making rigid requirements as to entrance. Our impression is that the Southern college whose diploma means more than any other does not hold en trance examinations. Nothing is to be lost by permitting a boy to enter college who may be weak in one or two branches. If he can not sustain himself after he has been admitted, then let him be turned out. But experience will prove that a large percentage of ill prepared students in our col leges will by vigorous exertions manage to sustain themselves cred itably in spite of a previous lack of first rate advantages. The class marking and class examinations should be strict of course but it is a mistake to maintain regulations that exclude many worthy young All Liquors bottled under the Dispensary “Red, White and Blue” label are distilled and guaranteed by us.
