Aldrich of Rhode Island, who is the recog nized Republican authority on the tariff in the United States, in a message to the New York World, states why there will be no legis- lation on either the tariff or the currency at the coming second eesaion of the fifty-fourth Con gresa, and then goes on to say: “The question of the precise character of the legislation on these two great subjects that should be adopted at the first ses •iou of the Fifty-fifth Congress is by far the most important one with which the members of that Congress will have to deal. The future of the Republican party may depend largely upon the measure of wisdom shown by the responsible majority in its treatment of this question.” Senator Aldrich may well have substituted “will” for “may” in the last sentence. The Republi cans in the fifty-fifth Congress will have a great responsibility resting upon them, and all the wisdom of their wisest men will have to be brought into play. “Wisdom and Conservatism” must be their motto in legislating upon these two great subjects if they would benefit the country tnd, not the least to them, preserve their party intact. Everybody is al lowed under the shed and in the cars, many of whom came to the depot with friends and occnpied seats until the trains moved off, depriving ladies and children of them.
