J IJL1J.U— •‘THE PURCHASE OK OFFICE.” Upon the subject indicated above the Atlanta Journal of Nov. 14 makes some sensible and timely remarks. It cites the case of Con gressman-elect James J. Belden Syraoruse, N. Y., whose oampa expenses were $13,180, or $3,1 more than his salary for the entire congressional term, and then goes on to say: “In some of the new States party nominations cannot be ob tained without the lavish use of money and much more has to hwf spent tc secure an election. Even in old Delaware, Addicks was brutally frank enough to declare that he had bought the Legislature and waa entitled to the senator-} ship. “This evil is growing. We evidences of it in Atlanta, w) it waa practically unknown a few yeara ago. It frequently happens here that good men are urged to run for important offices and de cline to do so because they have not the money to make the race and fear that without the boodle they will be beaten. Whenever a man announces his candidacy he is beset by a gang of heelers and if he does not hire them they apply to his opponent. Candi dates are largely to blame for the growth and increasing insolence of this disreputable element. They have been employed so often that they have come to consider them selves entitled to fees whenever a campaign occurs. Their influence is greatly ‘overestimated. They often do more harm than good to the men whom they bleed. Let na, aa far as possible, get rid of this corrupt and disgusting feature of our politics.” Yea, let us get rid of it, and quickly too. This practice is in deed corrupting and disgusting. It demoralizes those who give and those who take and it degrades honorable office, which should te a gift from the people, to the level of a purchasable commodity. Is not this enough to enlist the aid of every eelf-respecting, honorable and genuinely patriotic citizen in putting it down?
