The New York World in speak ing of the States carried by Bryan has this to say about the South : “He has carried the twelve States that mined and impover ished themselves in the Confed eracy and that have so large un ignorant element that about one fourth of the white voting popula tion cannot even read and write This fling loses a little of its ungraciousness in the light of the fact that the World itself is dense ly ignorant and wholly blind. It knows nothing and it can’t see. It purports to be a demo cratic paper and this is the way it speaks of democratic States True, the Southern States suf fered to an untold degree during the late war, but they have nobly recovered and in point of material prosperity are sweeping along with the rest. The World knows nothing about this. It knows nothing about the Southward course of manufacturing. It does uot know that the South is the coming part of this country, and that in time these twelve “ruined and impoverished” States will oc cupy a position second to none in the I'nion. Of course, it doesn’t know. The World is too blind to read the signs of the times. '1 rue again, there are illiterate white voters in the South, but the exact proportion we ourself can not give. Wo do not know where the World got its figures, or whether it has any or not. In an I probability it has none. As i« ignorance ami blindness it speaks of the “ruined and impoverished” Confederate States, so in ignor ance and blindness it says “that about one-fourth of their white voting population cauu t even read and write.” The World does not know what advancement the South has made in education. It does not know what the South is now doing along educational lines. The World is ignorant of fact and too blind to see existing conditions. Now, throw all the above aside and notice the spirit in which this statement is made. The World attempts to cast a re flection upon Bryan through those who voted for him. It attempts to have it appear that Bryan is supported in the South by a lot of impoverished ignoramuses, and that therefore his cause should be treated with contempt. Herein lies the smallness of the thing, and it is small to absolute mean ness. Though the World, a dem ocratic newspaper, did oppose Bryau, and is glad that McKinley triumphed, though it has a per fect right to contrast the character of Bryan’s support with the char acter of McKiuley’s support, though it may foolishly btlieve that all the culture aud all the wealth is on the Republican side of the fence, st ; ll there is neither reason nor excuse fnr this misera ble Bing at tha South.
