At least the activity displayed bv subordinates is pernicious, while the heads of cepartments ’them selves are allowed to do pretty much as they please. Within the last few days sev eral employes have bnen dis charged, among them Mr. Thos. F. Brantley, of South Carolina, who held a position in the Treas ury department. There was no cause for his removal except per haps his “pernicious activity in behalf of Bryan. While on leave of absence he delivered 11 few speeches in West Virginia. His speaking did not interfere with the discharge of his duties, but the speaking itself was adjudged suffi cient cause for his removal. Strange is it not? Mr. Carlisle himself left his duties and made speeches in Ken tucky, His activity has not been deemed pernicious.
