The city council are asking for bids for shade trees for the streets in Dillon, This is a move in the right direction. E. T. Elliott, one of Dillon’s popular livery men, spent last Sondav ju Florence, as the guest Of W. E., Elliott. Mr. ahd Mrs. S. Lane, of Car- tersvillel made a flying visit to friends in Dillon and Little Rock, on the 3rd. instant. Miss Nettie McKenzie, of Howes, arrived Saturday morning and spent Sunday with her sister, Miss Isla McKenzie, in this city, H. K. Cottiugham, Dillon’s pop ular barber, does first-class work at his shop, next poor to post-of fice. Call and see him. J. D. Pate and daughter, Miss Mary, from Donoho, were in town Monday afternoon and left on the evening train for Charleston. W. H. Peters, a prominent young salesman for the firm of Hamer <fc Thompson, of Little Rock, left last Sunday night for a week’s stay in Charleston. It is reported that two new firms are making arrangements to go in to business in Dillon January 1st. This will call for more stores, as there are none vacant at present. C B Townsend, of Lumberton, N C, visited Dillon last Friday, the guest of A K Parham He is favor ably impressed with this town and its surroundings. The rank of Knight was con ferred upon Esquire McIntyre on Thursday nicht last. The candi date proved himself well worthy the honor conferred upon him, Two cyclists, riding from Massa chusetts to Charleston, spent Tues day at the Hotel Emerson. Upon their arrival in Charleston they intend to take the steamer for Jacksonville, Fla. Henry Jackson, who lives a short distance east of Dillon, will soon erect a new residence on his farm It will be 30x36 feet in size and one story high. It will improve l.is place greatly. C. M. Freeman, who closed his school at Little Rock on Friday last, left Sunday for his home near Plum Branch, S. C., where he will spend a few months. He will read The Herald while there and keep up with the topics <>f interest of the day. Mrs. Betsey Hayes, who lives near Gaddy, was unfortunate enough to have her horse stolen from the stable last week. The thieves entered her residence also and helped themselves to the pro visions, etc. The guilty parties have not yet been captured. Hello! Hello! Mr. Watson, who has been erect ing the telephone line between Lattn, Dillon and Marion, finished bis work last Friday morning and Dillon was placed in direct com munication with the other two named cities. The Herald man took the liberty of talking to Mr. vV. II. Wells, who represents The Herald in Marion, and found the phone working to his ent're satis faction. It has been his pleasure to test several different telephone lines, but the line from Dillon to darion is the acme of all. The Herald wishes to congratulate the Pee Dee Telephone company upon their success in this line, and hopes they will push their work forward until Beimettsville and Florence will also be connected on this line. A switch-board will probably be placed in Dillon, Latta and Ma rion at an early date and private phones put in, which will be of t,r*at convenicnc * t > the busisicss men of the three towns.
