The Messenger of last week pub lishes the article from The Times in which it speaks of the compli mentary invitation from the Pal mer House, of Chicago, and says: “The Daily Times of Monday says: The Palmer House, of Chicago, one of the most noted hostelries of the country, has struck upon a novel but excellent plan of adver tising. They have enclosed to the editor of The Times and wife, an invitation to .spend three days with them without expense, dur ing the coming winter. We must beg to be excused. It is too cold in Chicago, though one can be su premely comfortable in the Pal mer House, and on account of the excellence of the house, we fall into the plan and give them the benefit of this notice.” “The editor of The Messenger has also received an invitation from the proprietor of the Palmer House “to accept the compliments and courtesies of the hotel, for three days, good until April 1, 1896, for self and wife, on the American p!au, in any room from §2.50 to $4 per day.’ The editor of the Daily Times is either get ting blind and cannot read a type written letter or he was too anxious to believe that the Palmer House, of Chicago, desired to com pliment him. Paying ‘from .$2.50 to $4 per day’ is certainly not “without expense.” Knowing that “The editor of The Daily Times” was right in his reading of the “type written letter” but wishing to give the edito** of The Messenger occular proof of his correctness, and at the same time to remove from the minds of the press of the State the misapprehension which might be caused by the erroneous article of The Messenger we sent a copy of both The Times and the Messen-i ger articles to the manager of the Palmar House, requesting them to state in words that the editor of the Messenger could understand, what it meani, and the following is their reply which we commend to the editor of the Messenger as one which will be explanatory of i _ the words “compliments and hos pitalities” and will be handy for! reference when he wishes to under stand a “type written” letter. The only reason as shown by the last letter, why they stated “Rooms from $2.50 to $4 per day” was, that persons who might, like tiin editor of the Messenger, bo used to $20 per day rooms would, if they took such rooms, be expected to pay the difference : ' PRIVATE OFFICE. Dear Sir:— Your letter of Nov. 30th came du'y to hard, and in reply, will say*that the letter which we wrote you sometime since, wo thought expressed exactly what we meant, and that was, that we extended to you and your wife the compliments and hospitalities of the hotel for three days, good any time during the period between now and Apr. 1st, ’96. We certainly would not offer you the compliments and hospi talities of the hotel and expect you to pay for them. In reference to the $2.50 and $4 per day, this sim ply gives you the privilege of auy class of room you may be pleased to ask for between those prices Any time you may be able to honor us with a visit, you will find that the letter, upon presenta tion to the room clerk, will be ac cepted for three days room and board for yourself and wife. Those engaged in it should have to pay the penalty for murder. Red Cress Mission. Boston, Dec 5.—A special meet ing of the prudential committee of the American Board was held this afternoon for the purpose of re questing the Red Cross Society, of which Clara Barton of Washington is president,'* to undertake relief work in Turkey as an international organization. A formal request was adopted and will be forwarded to Miss Barton at once. It is be lieved by those advocating the step that the organization being inter national in its character, is the one which can successfully admin ister America’s relief contributions in Turkey.
