Lorick & L< COLUM THE FARMER'S RIGHT TO A JOYOUS EXISTENCE. ! Of course the man on the farm lives more cheaply than the man in town. It is not so easy for the farmer to spend money. There is not a 50-cent moving picture show inviting his purse every night, there is no 50-cciu ball game or $1 matinee almost constantly asking the patronage of him sell ancl his ramiiy in tne afternoon; a thousand other things which are regarded as "necessary" expenses of town life are not found in the country. But if the farmer spends less for these so-called "advantages" of modern life than townspeople spend, is that any reason why he should receive less for his day's work? Rather should he not receive "equal pay for equal work" and be able to use his surplus in developing in the country > a compensating and parallel. system , of "advantages" adapted to the conditions of rural life?public and private libraries, individual and comi munity music, community meetingplaces for music, sports, recreation, community drama, etc.? In short, the public must not as| sume that all the agencies for social J pleasure are the peculiar right and privilege of the town worker, and that therefore no allowance need be made ' for such expenditures in the country. On the contrary, the farmer must demand and get such wages as will enable him to realize upon the profound declaration which former Sec retary of Agriculture David F. Houston once made to the writer: \ . "The farmer is entitled to a joyous ! existence." Among the inalienable rights thai our Revolutionary ancestors named as = the heritage of every freeman art "life, lierty, and the pursuit of happiness." Eut to what extent, we ma> I ask, has "the pursuit of happiness' i been recognized as a right of the American farmer, the farmer's wife, anc the farm children? Too often tht farmer has been abused because?reI ceiving a decent wage for once in his life during the\World War and jus after?he indulged in the purchase ol a cheap flivver! And even the flivvei I in his case was two-thirds an agencj ! of business, saving him and hi: teams much valuable time by it: quick trips to market, and only onethird an agency of pleasure?wheera: ? i the majority of town cars are almos g exclusively pleasure cars. -The public must indeed recognizi 0 | "the farmer's right to a joyous exist' 5 ' ence" including reasonable recreation 3 : social intermingling, music, play, ant i i a vacation once a year.?The Pro 1J gressive Farmer. For his own part, if the writer had to list oflhar.d the country sights and sounds that give him most delight, he would mention: The serenity and strength of ancient oaks, unmoved by all the storms of a century; The stately grace and majesty of tall tulip trees with erect, fair trunks wearing at great heights their crowns of green in summer and gold in autumn; The rich mellow note of the rain crow, uttering his prophecy in the dampness of a cloudy dawn; The smell of hay and old haylofts; The- low song of the corn-blades as they grasp brotherly hands across the furrows when winds blow over the fields; The grateful warmth of the .spots where the cows lay as one goes to milk on a wintry morning; The clean white limbs of sycamores against their background of green' foliage; The rank and tropical, Amazonsuggesting luxuriance of a squashvine or pumpkin vine in full leaf and blossom; The ever-grateful smell of freshlyplowed earth, and the prosperous, comfortable, "well-fed" feel of a rich soil filled with humus; The pungent, aromatic smell of fai lightwood, and the more subduec i fragrance of freshly cut oak; The rare beauty of form, so much loved by artists, of grape leaves anc hanging grape bunches; > The penetrating, mouth-watering fragrance of ripe Scuppernongs a : dewfall in -early September; ; The rare beauty of a line of long: leaf pines silhouetted against a twi . light sky; The grace of well-kept meadows 01 lawns with straggling wild flowers or . ' the edges, reminding one of Swin I burne's line? > "Where tides of grass break int< . foam of flowers"; : The cheerful, cherub-like babble o t ' little brooks as they hurry down t< f the greater streams in the lowlands; The unhurried but steady and re ? sistless movement of the rivers a 5 they sweep majestically past over 3 hanging willows to their home in thi far-off sea. 3 ?The Progressive Farmer. He Reassured Her. An American bride went to live i' I that faraway American dependencj the Philippine Islands, where a! household servants are nariv "boys."
