Governor Harvey' yesterday addressed a letter to the foreman of the ./ . >} ' Marion eounfy ".grand jury in which he calls- upon this official for an inr vestigation of conditions in the county : in regard to prisoners being allowed too :many liberties;'4 The governor* Is*' in receipt ots information that1 a num-j ber of prisoners in Marion county are i treated as if they were the best citi- j zens, accorded liberties of all kinds]and in eeneral are faring a good deal} better thany many hard working men | who obey the law. *1 The governor does not like" such treatment 01' prisoners anywhere and he proposes to see that the men serving time- tor violating the laws are J punished.- The governor can- only do! his partand if-sentiment in a county j arises to such an extent that the peo- ' pie will sanction such action as is re- j ported from Marion, the county is in a rather serious condition, the gover-; nor believes. i The most flagrant case to come to { ! the attention of the chief executive is tJv'at of the Turners, Archie and Mack. The Turners are on the chaingang; but that is about all. They are allowed to go home whenever they get ready, the -governor is advised, and one.-of them jaas-been gathering tobacco for several days.A large number of prisoners have escaped from the chaingangs and 13 are at large now, the chief magistrate is advised. This condition does not please the governor at all and he yesterday took action1 to bring it to a -stop.- The governor does not believe' in inhuman treatment, but he strong ly believes in carrying out court sen-, tences and when a man kills another -hSiti-ds "'sentenced for a term of years on .the chairgarig the governor believes he should serve the sentence.
