THE HACK LIINE IK ANT I BELUM DAYS, ETC. (By Uncle .Josh.) As the public began to apj^reciate the Columbia. Lexington, Lecsvllle, Batcsburg and Saluda Bus Line, It was to be regretted that the owners found it lacking of the necessary pat- : ronage to guarantee its continuance, and, therefore, had to discontinue the same, since which the local and public have crroatlv missed its convon I fence.. This lino carried us far back, and reminded us of the old Stage Line ran in anti-belum days and before railroad facilities, which had hacks of the old Western style with long boob behind, carrying the baggage for passengers. The hacks would accommodate as muny as 6 or 3 passengers and their trunks. The line ran from Augusta via lJdgcficld. Wards, Leesville and Lexington to Columbia, and was drawn by front two to four horses, making regular dally trips. There were stations at various places along the line, from four to six miles apart, where fresh horses were ready in harness waiting for tlio change, and but little time was consumed in making the change, and they were making fast time, with I*. S. Mail and passengers, horses often in a live trot, for the end of destination. I We remember on the route were stations at Warils. Lecsvllle, Mr. 1). Shealy's, Jim Jlnllman's or Alewiiie's, The Hayer' Place, Mrs. Itawl's. three miles above I.exnigton, Lexington, Mrs. Nancy Tarrer's, Joel C'orley's, the Sycamore (Sharpe's), Mrs. Ramiek's. Mrs. Matilda .loyner's, Clark's? Columbia. The hack remaining over night in Columbia and early in the morning would return for Augusta. Reuben llarr.uia was postmaster at Lexington for? over forty years, consetiuently, his boys, were of great help, especially Marion lj.. and Godfrey M., who were rear- d in the service ot the post office, as - b-rkr and assistants, ' 'lie hack driver carrhd a tin horn ! or f> feet in length, which had a powerful keen sound. On arrival at tht hill, beyond the factory, coming from Columbia, it was blown to nntifltaMH to have the mail sacks locked HsB I ready bv the time the stage nr^BHE at the office door. At the appi^EjS of the village coining from Aug^HSa this same horn was sounded uI^BmE hill at Mr. James Stuart's eo^^^H "Cor the same purpose. At the ^E$3 time, the driver gave extra tnotHme as many passengers as he hud^HBfl| meals, at the Ilariaan Hotel, lo^^^H near the office, which said iBp were prepared and on the table wlien-the Tiael; arrived.
