they have been for quite a while. D.

working of them and does the work
with three hands, one truck tractor,

outfit than he could with thirty men

more thus used than $1000., as
it is usually expended. He says that

[ ULTIMATE TROUBLE
UNLESS REMEDIED
> Baltimore, Feb. 12.?Ultimate con^
flict between the United States and
Japan over the Japanese problem on
the Pacific coast, unless a remedy tor
the present condition is found, was
predicted tonight by United States
Senator James D. Phelan of Califor.
nia at the banquet of the Baltimore
chapter, American Institute of Banking,
at the Southern hotel here.
"This alien invasion is threatening
the life of California as a white commonwealth,"
the senator said, "and
, the only protests by white Californians
being made against California's
efforts to rid herself of the Japanese
immigrant are made through selfish
J cupidity and not by patriotism.
"There are now 100,000 Japanese in
California," the senator said. "They:
have 65 Shinto temples in which their j
children are trained to worship the1
emperor of Japan. They own or coni
trol 463,000 acres of arable lands or
one acre in every eight. One child in
every 13 born in California is a Japanese.
"The Japanese control the bulk Of

fruits fixing the prices. Last year
they took $89,000,000 out of California
soil and sent it to Japan to build
Japanese industries to compete
against us and to build ships which
may fight against us.
"This ultimately means conflict if
the problem is not settled. California
will fight its land. The only way war
can be averted is by remedying the
evil, and the only time to remedy it

TESTING SPRAY MATERIALS
Clemson College, February 14.?In
order to meet the demand for more
information in regard to the control
of diseases and insect pests a comparative
test of spraying materials
has been taken up by the horticultural
division of the South Carolina
Experim mt Station. It is especially
desirable to find materials for spraying
which shall be simpler to prepare
and more convenient to use. A number
of prepared sprays in the powder
or liquid form are in use for comparison
with the standard liquid sprays.
This work has received the hearty cooperation
of the manufacturers of

Several brands of prepared Bordeaux

with the standard Bordeaux and Burgundy
mixtures.
The Bursrundv mixture is pre- .
pared by dissolving one pound of copper

of water and two pounds of salsoda
in an equal amount of water.
. The two solutions are poured at the
same time into a part of a barrel of
water and more water is added to
