Abie DuRant, colored, who was sihot by Rural Policeman Hardy about two weeks ago, died in a hospital in Sum ter last Wednesday, and his body brought to Manning Thursday morn ing. The coroner summoned a jury andl held an inquest. The verdict of the jury was that Abie DuRant came to his death by gun shot wounds in flicted by one B. M. Hlardy while in the discharge of his (duty. Morris Ness was the victim of a check flasher last Saturday. A young white man presented a check for $30.00 to Mr. Ness signed by J. E. Gamble and madle payable to J. W. Coleman. Trho check was dIrawn on the Bank of Manning. The check wvas a forgery as Sheriff Gamble (lees not known anything about it and did not write it. Very likely there is no such person as J. W. Coleman. The trick was worked and Mr. Ness is out of $30.00. . The postoffice, bank, and some-of the business houses were closed. A large number of the men went hunting. There was not the usual large number of turkey dinners served, but our people realize that while the past year has been a try ing one, they have much to be thanl ful for in- that they are reasonably prosperous and the community has been blessed with good health. Miss-Iva Geddings who is teaching at Hemmingway, and Lucile Geddings of - Columbia College, spent the Thanksgiving holidays with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Ged dings. Mai T. I. Owen of Walterboro, visited relatives and friends in the community this Week. Messrs. Claude McLeod and Walter Brown moved their families to Flor ence the past week. Mrs. C. K. Curtis was unexpectedly calledy home last Monday on account of the illness of her brother, Mr. Le erne Crai ,of Cheraw. He is now re or ted imp ving. Mrs. Elma Tisdale and son Wil liam retuined te their home at Sum ter, on Sunday, after a few days visit at the home of Mr. F. S. Geddings. Mr. Steve Lambert of Hemming way, spent the' week-end with friends near town. 'Miss Florence Felder who is teach ing near Kershaw, spent the holidays at her home. Mr. C. H. Broadway has recently purchased the residence vacated by Mr. T. R. Owen and will move his family here this week. The local Woman's Christian Tem pei'nce Union held a Medal Contest at the Methodist Church on Thursday evening. The program was , inter spered with piano and violin duets. Miss Fannie Mae Barwick was the winner of the medal. The same pro gram was repeated at Homne Branch Church on Sunday afternoon when Miss Emmalie Koll$ was the success ful one. Mrs. Henry McLeod was un tiring' in her efforts for the success of the occasion. The next meeting of the Union will be Tuesday afternoon, De cember 12th at the home of the presi dent, Mrs. F. S. Geddings.
