The new Gav ernor General said tonight' that his position, was that he was the 'rep resentative of the imperial, govern mont and had to see, on the one hand, that the constitution was not violated ind, on the other that the treaty was adhered to. As he understood it his position was similar to that of the Gov ernor General of .Canada, where consultations were held between the Governor and the London cab inet whereby a common state of mind was .reached. In 'internal Irish affairs he would be the servant of the Irish government and would be advised by that government. Regarding himself personally he smilingly remarked that -he would - still be Tim Healy, at least to .is friends. Referring to the status of the Free State, Mr. Healy declared: "We have been given a measure of freedom as large, as that en joyed by any of the States in the American Union. The only blot is the separation of the six bounties from the rest of the. country, but I hope that in a fe* years by a spirit of mutual concession, the Nort and the South will come to gothe in a unificatio not the coun try. "We ask that the American public," he added, "to give the new Irish government their moral sup port, or at any rate- not give its enemies financial support." ASH PIT MURDER PRODE New York, Dec. 6.-The Bronx - County grand 4jury investigating the lash pit murder of Mrs. Jennie Becker today returned a superseding indict ment agains her husband, Abraham, a chauffeur, and another indictment ".against his friend, Reuben Nordkin, owner of 'a welting shop -near where the woman was buried alive. Both indictments charged firstidegree mur der. The same-jury Friday returned one indictment, paming'Becker alone. The next day the police claimed to have, wrung from Nordkin a confes sion that he had played lookout the night, more than eight months ago, when Becker was alleged to have hit wife on the head with an iron pipe and dragged her, stijl breathing, to a pit nearby. LEAVE~ AMERICAN FLAG New York, Dec. 6.-The trans Atlantic liners Resolute and Reli ance, .of the United American lines, were today formally transferred to Panama registry because, ac cording to the president of the lines, the prohibitioni laws made it financially impossible for the two ships to cope with -foreign vessels which can sell liquor on the high seas. According to a statement by Rt. H. M. Robinson, the president, the pro hibition ruling forced the company to cancel practicall yall sailings for the Resolute's winter' cruise and the change of flag followed. CO-OPS HOLDING COUNTY MEETINGS Tobacco and Cotton Growers Join Forces in Eastern North Carolina. Mass meetings of Tobacco Growers in 22 counties of North Carolina starting on Monday of this. week, are being held to furnish members of the Tobacco Growers Co-operative Asso ciation with the latest information from headquarters. Ooming on the eve of a second pay ment to members in this territory these meetings are expected to draw record crowds. In Eastern Carolina counties members of the Cotton Growers Co-operative Association are joining forces for-these mass meet ings. Dr. Clarence Poe and B. W. Kil gore are to add~ress meetings in six eastern counties while growers at other meetings are to hear talks from R.- J. Works of Kentucky and J. E. Rogers of Virginia, L. V. Morrill, Jr., is holding eight coqnty meetings in the central belt beginning at Rox-. boro and ending at Burlington De comber 13. JOHNSON Mrs. Joanora Johnson died at her home at New Zion Monday morning, November 27th after an illnera of six weeks. All was done for her that medical aid could do but God saw fit to take her home. She was 75 yepis old and a member of New Zion Metho dist Church.
