WINTIfIIOP' CHAPT'ER ORGANIZED IN MANNING A number of Winthrop College gradluates gathered at the school house Mondlay evening, November 0th for the purpose of discussing the or ganization of a Winthrop Chapter in Clarendon County. Miss Leila Russel of the Extension D~epartment of Winthrop College was here to assist in this undlertaking. Miss Russel traced the growth of Winthrop from a one teacher, one room school of thirty-six years ago to the Winthrop of today with more than a score of buildings and a faculty of~ one hundred and fifty hett' ai wo men, briefly reviewed the work of the past, outlined the present Work and in a few words presented the ideal Winthrop of the future and the~part that each graduate can take, throupl the Winthrop Chapter and alummin Assodiation, in making this Ideal come true. Miss Russel's remarks were indeed inspirational. It was voted that a Chapter be or ganized in this County under the name Winthrop Chapter of Clarendon Coun ty. The following officers were elect ed: President, Mrs. J. E. Arant; Vice-President, Mrs. R. R. Jenkinson, Secretary, Miss Rose Ervin Treasur er, Miss Katharine Earle, Gleaner, Mrs. W. R. GERMANY NEEDING FOO DFOR PEOPLE Paris, Nov. 14.-Germany must find some way of getting 800,000, 000,000 marks worth of grain to feed her people dlurin gthe next year, the reparations commission learned in its investigation in Ber lini. As this amount is aibout double the present total of praper money in circulation in Germany, purchase of the grain is (deemed impossible, except through speedy financial rehabilitation of the country or food credlits from abroadl. It seems to b~e generally taken for granted that both the credlits andl the food wvouldl have to come from America. The 800,000,000,000 marks repre sents G;er~many's import require nmentsg for the next twelve months of 2,000O,000 tons of grain, the mini nmum amount thought necessary to prevent starvation. Any attempt to buy this cereal in a foreign market wouldl, in the opinion of experts, cause a complete colaipse of the mark, with a serious reaetion in the exchange o fthe other Euro.. pean countries.
