IENUCKY HARMERS MAKE MONEY BY CULLING POULTRY Many people, are skeptical regard ing the advisability of culling the poultry flock during the fall months. Many more people have never given attention to the farm poultry flock and don't realize that It can be made one of the most profitable lines on the farm. The poultry culling campaign which will be carried on in Clarendon county moder the direction of the County Home Demonstration Agent during the early fall will, however, bring many people to realize that the farm flock can be made a much more profit able operation than ordinarily realiz ed. It is safe to say that 30 per cent of the hens on the farm do not pro duce enough eggs during the year to pay for the feed they consume. By simple tests which can readily be un derstood by the owner of the Poultry flock, these unprofitable hens can be eliminated; the same number of eggs will be produced, and there will be a material saving in the poultry feed bill. The poultry culling campaign in Ku ntucky last year proved to be a 3*.~ YOURF We a day for of the S ,00H t( out to ers, wil I at all p1 It Wi right 11 afttenti( to your sale at land fo I ~pa rticu Webbe ton I Cut out the I ucas Paint "When your prop don't promise it-d< ever price you pay the cheapest thing; money, when compi effected, in keepinj and labor from goil wear and decay. plete stock of depe Stains, Varnishes,]1 Dry Colors, ColorE B rushes and access we know we can it wants a good job. Following is ak brief report of the culling work as carried on lur ing the fall of 1919 in that State: The poultry specialists with the as sistance of the County and Home Dem onstratio -Agents 'culled 606 flocks of poultry in 66 different counties. They handled 36,247 hens and culled 11,448 or 81.6 per cent as being poor producers and unfit to pass through another season of egg production. In th,is cAmpaign the average farm flock was composed of 54.2 chickens of which 17.2 were unfit.' Mrs. T. A. Poulter of Anchorage, Ky. culled her flock and found it a profitable peice of work. Her flock consisted of 52 Rhode Island Red Islpnd Red hens. She culled 19 fowls on August 25 as being unfit. The pre vious week from her entire flock she obtained 92 eggs or an average pro duction of 25.3 per cent. After cull ing her flock, the culled hens, 19 in number were placed in a pen by them selves for a period of one week. They laid only one egg during this time while the birds not culled laid 102 eggs or 45.9 per cent. Last year the culling work as con ducted in Indiana was estimated as being worth about $75.00 to the own er of the average farm flock when systematically carried on.
