SD Ps WI!L THE COURT HOUSE BE MOVED TO SUMMERTON Summerton, S. C., May 10th. Editor of The Manning Times: Several days ago, I had the pleasure of traveling from Sumter via Mannins to Summerton on the Smith jitney. I was indeed pleased to note the good work, which my friend, Supervis or Kelly, ha sdone in the matter of building up the Black River Swamp, which is indeed a monument to good citizenship and which will do much towards connecting the social and business interests of the towvns of Summerton, Manning and Sumter. But Smith, the jitney man, is actually doing as much for the welfare of the people of Sumter, Summerton and Manning, as Supervisor Kelly. Supervisor Kelly has made it pos sible for the people of Summnerton to travel by jitney or automobile to Manning and Sumter without a stop, and Smith, the jitney man, comes to Summ.-erton twice each d1ay and makes the trip to Sumter onice each day at reasonable rates of travel. It goes without saying, that Super visor Kelly and Smith, the jitney, man should be encouraged in their good work. Manning is a good town and has recently (lone a goodI thing, when the people elected as Mayor, Capt. W. C. Davis, an able lawyer and an educat ed citiz(en, wvho is interestedi ini the common good, but the highway en trance to Manning from the Sumter sideC and the' highway entrance to Manning from the Summnon side, are both a disgrace to the town of Manning. The entrance to Manning from the Summerton side, just with in the Corporate l im its, is e xceed Iingl y SWestern a a MEa R Every Tuesd J. A. Summer ton is of course a better town thai either Manning or Sumter, because we .have here better lands and bettei people, and good people and fine lands make a community, and the day is fas approaching when the Court House will be moved frdm Manning to Sum merton. We need a better railroad a Summerton, but Smith the jitney man is supplying some of the needs o: travel and it will not be many years before several jitneys will be runninl between Sumter and Sunmmerton vii Manning. Manning did a good thinj sometime ago, when it voted fo: water works and street paving, an< Summcrton should do theso ver' things in the ncar future. In this (lay and generation, a towi without water works, is put dIown ii the black belt of civilization, becausi dIry wells are not only against the lawvs of South Carolina when main tained in towns the size of Summertoi or Manning, but against the rules o sanitation.
