These facts aL brought out in a series of 16 tests fo mulated by the Department of Agi culture to show whether or not a far is being efficiently managed. The average farm family, made t of five adult persons or their equivi lent, requires for its proper maintei ance 2 cows, 40 fowls for furnishir eggs and poultry meat, and 1 pig f< each adult person or his equivalen Enough calves should be raised to ,r vplac.e each cow reaching the age of years. This family live stock, it is c culated, will require 1 ton of corn at cbmeal, 1,234 pounds of cottoniet meal, 55 bushels of corn, 40 bushe of oats, 4,200 pounds of cowpea ha 2,100 pounds of oats hay, 4,200 lb of corn roughage, green forage fro 2 acres and 5 acres of pasture or the equivalent. A fair provision to a het for work stock is 60 bushels of cor: 40 bushels of oats, and 3 tons < roughage. The arrangement of crol fand pasturage to meet these requiri ments are suggested in United State Department of Agriculture Circulf * No. 83, "Testing Farms in the Sout for Efficiency in Management."
