Chratermal rer what weth w. townay BANDITS ROB SEVERAL _JEWELRY STORES1 Broadway Thrown Into Greatest Ex citement . as Daring Robbers Smash Big Windows and Grab Diamonds. New York, March 12-While Broad way tonight was crowded with thea ter - goers, three armed bandits smashed in the windows of a jewelry store at Thirty-seventh street, kept - t!he crowds at bay with their revol vers until they had emptied the con tents of several trays into their pock etF and then escaped, shooting one pedestrian who attempted to stop them. 1 A few minutes later three men en tered another Broadway jewelery store a few blocks uptown and after throwiving pepper in a clerk's eyes, 4 grabbed some trays of jewelry and i ran from the store. The men, alleged ) to be members of the trio, wbre ar rested by the police after a chase. Both robberies, committed in the heart of the white light district, were witinessed by thousands of persons. Broadway was3 thrown into the great est excitement as police reserves ar rived on the double-quick, and work on the theory that the robberies were committed by two different bands, raced up and down side streets and scoured the subway for the four missing bandits. In addition to the pedestrian who was shot, but not seriously injured, 1one other memeber of the crowd 8uc ceeded in getting his finger on a fu gitive. Hie was rewa-ded by a crack on the wrist from a revolver butt which caused his arm to fall helpless ly to his side. Proprietors of the two stores esti mated that thousands of dollars worth of jewelry had been stolen. The first robbery, in which Schwartz Brothers were the victims, was engineered with great daring. While rubbing elbows with passing pedestrians one of the bandits slipped ] an iron bar through the handles of R the (loor so that it could not be open ed from the inside. Then a brick, wrapped in cloth, was hurled through the window. At the jingic of -glling glass, Franmk Schwartz ran excitedly to the, door I and tried to pull it open as he shouted I for help. The crowd, also attracted 1 by the crash, swarmed about the rob bers ,two of whom continued at their task of raking diamonds and rubies out of the window, while the third member of their party kept specta tors at bay. Seeing the crowds halt and form in a semi-circle around the store, Pa trolman Welgan came racing to the scene. Just as he arrived and began to fight his way through the excited throng the robbers called it a day's work, packed the last of the gems into their pockets, parted company and ]started each for himsel to carve a way through the human seii-circle. Then came gun play. Sighting a man breaking awvay from the crowd and (darting up Broadway, Welgan, w ~ith dlrawVn revolver, gave chase. rho crowds took to cover as they heard the crack of a revolver, but RWeigan had missed and the robberI sped on. In front of the fugitive wvasI ai subway aii hole with the cover off, Sand through this hole the bandit1 jump~ed to the subway tracks fifteen Sfeet below. lie narrowly missed be- ) ing struck by a passing train, for the roar of its progress was heard on the I street above a few seconds after the robbern played his last card and won. But after reserves had assembled in full force and searchedl the subway from F'orty-secondl street diwon to I Trhirty-fourth street up they found ~ no trace of the daring bandit and ~ were forced to adlmit that he had Sstrolled to the nearest station, jumped upon the platform andl escapedl. The second robbery occurred in the store of Marcus Feldman, betwven Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth streets, where the theater throngs are thick eat. 1 -0--- .-... AMERICAN EYES ARE ON MEXICAN RACE.
