Insects are enemies of flock profits. Heavy infestations of herns by para sites interfere with egg yield and ex ert an objectionable offect on the gen eral condition of the flock, inasmuch as they are a source of annoyance and discontent. During the winter season when, in many sections, the fowls are maintained indoors much of the time, it is particularly essential that the fowls be protected against losses from mites, lice, and other oonoxious ver min which multiply in the poultry dwelling. Knowing that poultry mites hide away in cracks and crevices during the daytime, the vital control which should be immediately enforced is thorough cleaning of the interior of the houses, roosts, and nests, and thereafter a spray thoroughly with kerosene, crude oil, or some heavy coal-tar prepar' tion. It is highly im - perative that tie spray should pene-1 trate to all the cracks, crevices, cran nies, and corners where the mites may be hiding. The heavy coal-tar preparations are most effective and most enduring in control work of this sort. They can be purchased at most drug stores with full directions- for, mixing and use. Forty Thieves of Flo : Profits There are more than 40 distinct species of lice which are a source of continuous annoyance to adult poul try, as well as to the young chickens, according to poultry specialists of the United States Departnient of Agri culture. The fact that the army of invaders is so numerous and varie gated is of special moment and neces sitates persistent and continuous con trol practices. At present, when the prices of all feeds are abnormaly high it is particularly essential that the poultryman realize the maximum re turn from his expenditures for feed stuffs. To such an end it is needful that all such unwelcome guests as lice, mites, and other ravaging marau ders be barred from the flock. Dust Bath for Biddy There should be a place in the yard or house where the hens can dust them selves in the dry dirt. If it is neces sar yto provide an artificial medium for this work, a box about two feet square, filled with ordinary road (lust 5 or fine dirt, should be made constant ly accessible to the matrons and mis ses of the flock. The hens must be kept as free as possible from infection by insect enemies, and if the birds 5 themselves can not gain this end by 5 individual dusting the owner should 5 institute artificial control measures. To rid the hens of lice each one should be treated by placing small pinches of sodium fluorid, a material which can be obtained at most large drug stores, among the features next 5to the skin-one pinch on the head, one on the neck, two on the back, one on the breast, one below the vent, one at the base of the tail, one on either Aside, and one scattered on the un d (erside of each wing wvhen spread. An other method is to use a small quan tity of blue ointment, a piece about as large ais a pea, on the skin 1 inch be low the vent. If mercurial ointment is used insteadl of blue ointment it should be dliluted with an equal quan tity of vaseline. Any of these me thods will be found very effective in riddting the hens of lice, and should he employed whenever the lice become tiroublesome. Two or three applica tions a year usually prove sufficient. M es are more troublesome and mnore harmful than lice. They (do not live upon the birds like the lice, but -during the day hidle in the cracks and cievices of the roosts and walls of the house, and at night they emerge and wander around upon the fowls. They suick the hen's blood, and( if allowed to become plentiful--as they certainly will if not destroyed-will seriously affect. her health and conseugently her ability to lay eggs. They may be radlica'ted by a few thorough appli cations of kerosene., or some of the coal-tar products which are sold for Sthis pinrpose, or crudle petroleum to the interiior of the poultry house. Crude petroleum will spray better if thinned with one part of kerosene to four pats of the crude oil. Both the crude petroleum and coal-tar products often contain foreign particles, andl should be stritned before being sprayed. The poultiryman must be sure that the -spray reaches all the cracks and cre vices. ie should give special atten tion to the roosts, dIroppings hoards, and nests, and the treatment should1 be repeated two or three times at in tervals ,f a week or ten days. 0 Uave's Tastlees chl TonIc reotores vitality and energy by purifying and on j~1riching the blood.
