Columbia. Novembpr 7.-Four deaths and about twenty cases of se rious illness have occurred in Colum-' bia recently from drinking substitutes for intoxicating. liquors, according to the local police department. Locally, the prohibition law appar ently is a dead letter, for there have recently been many cases of drunk eness here, and it is-an "open secret" that it is no hard job to purchase li quor from illicit dealers here. Rumor has it that it can be bought from "blind tigers" operating in the heart .of the town. However, liquor is a luxury here, for the market price is $16 per quart, for an inferior, grade. The real trouble in Columbia results from the drinking of shoepolish, bit ters, extracts and doctored "monkey rum," etc., according to the police. These concoctions evidently have some powerful poison in them, as their vic tims become unconscious, foam at the mouth, become unconscious, and some times (lie. Recently a prominent farmer from the lower section of Richland county visited Columbia, where he met one of his friends who invited him to im bibe. He took two drinks of some sort of liquor with his friends, and shortly afterward became unconscious frothed at the mouth and snapped like he had hydrophobia. Immediate medical aid was all that saved his life. At the meeting of the South Caro ilna Advancement Association here Wednesday, Gov. Cooper, in his speech took a somewhat discouraged view of illicit distilling. He said that stills were being operated in every part or the State and that reports were com in gte him daily of illicit distillation. He stated that he lacked the funds to give prompt atention to all the re ports, and had to rely largely on pub lic opinion to stop the making of li quor. The force of constables employed by the governor have been doing heroic work during the past several months, assisted by federal agents, in breaking up stills and arresting offenders. It seems, however, as soon as one still is consficated or destroyed, two or three others arise to take their place. LARGE VERDICT RENDERED Bamberg, Nov. 7.-The case of Dr. J. W. Wyman, of Denmark, against the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Com pany, resulted in one of the heaviest verdicts ever rendered in this county, damage to the amount of $20,000 being awarded for personal injury. No punitive damage was asked. This case, on account of the p rom inence of the plaintiff, who is one of the leading physicians in this section. has attracted wide attention. The case was begun last Friday morning and was concluded Monday pight, when the jury returned a verdict in favor of the plaintiff. Dr. Wyman, in company with a Mr. Cloydi, whom Dr. Wyman had picked up on the road, was returning from a visit to a patient last April to his home in Denmasrk. As he approached the Atlantic Coast Line crossing at Denmnark, according to the testimony of witnesses, a freight train was blocking the road. ie stopped h is au tomobile a few feet from the tracks and1 waited for the freight to get across the road. As soon as the train passed it is stated, hearing no signiil nor seeing any flagmnj, ne di rove on to the track immedliately behind the last car of the freight. As his car reached the track behince the freight, another freight going south struck the automible, demolishing it and throwing Dr. Wy' tan on the cow catcher of the engine. Hie sustained serious injuries, resulting in nearly five weeks spent in a hospital. As a result of his injurise D~r. Wy man asked for $75,000 actual dam ages, andi the j ury gave him $20,000. Th e other occupant of the car, Mr. Cloyd, sustainled less serious injuries, and a suit brought b~y him is pending. this case having been continued. OUT OF TOWN .Johnstown, Pa., Nov. 7.- William '%. Foster, steel strike organ izer, and others associatedi with him, were or dleredl out of Johnstown tonight by a commiittee of business men iand steeCl workers. Fostor was here to adldress a meeting of strikers. A crowd gath ered in front of a hotel and rioting was narrowly avertedl when one of the organ izers declined to leave hiis room. Foster obeyed the order to de part , saving lhe dIidl so to prevent dlis order.
