About 6,000,000 Americans are go ing hunting this fall, according to an estimate made by the. American Game Protective and Propagation As sociation. Whether the army of Am erican- hunters is really this large is doubted by some obcials of the Bio logical Survey, but they admit that the number is several millions. This article is designed to give the hunters some late facts about the game which they hunt and to' provide interesting information for all readers. For wild fowl; according to the government naturalists, this should be an excellent year everywhere, ex cept in the Rocky Mountain ,states, where the weather has been so dry that there are poor' accommedations for the wild ducks and geese. Out West the wild fowl are dependent up on shallow ponds and sloughs formed by rain water and in dry years they simply go elsewhere. In the East on the other hand where the wild fowl inhabit great rivers and botys that are not affected by seasonal conditions, the hunting should be unusually gogl. Ever since the Federal migratoryb hird law was passed, protecting the wild fowl in their spring migrations ,they have been increasing steadily. In addition to this, last winter was such a mild one that few birds were killed. There were 'several reasons for this. They did not gither in the Central Atlantic - states, whee much of the hunting is !:8ittif2ut21ttit2ttitttttttttittttrni A N ed one Metre' ' the wo "Life I Two fea when i mmense home fur -se helpful Ri V. The mild weather also pro tected the bids by enabling them to re main out in the open water, where the hunters could not reach them, where as cold weather forces them to go into little sheltered creeks and ponds and to stay about openings in the 'ice where they are easily killed. The Grouse and Quail. With regard to the upland birds the grouse and ciail-reports are not nearly so/ encouraging. No fedeal law protects these birds. Their pro tection is purely a matter of state law. The ruffed grouse, which, under various names, is sought by hundreds of thousands of gunners from Massa. chussetts to Minnesota and from Vir. ginia to the Cdnada line is reported scarce almost everywhere. Disease and a pest of hawks have made the strug. gle unusually hard for the grouse the past few years, and unless carefull. protected they will soon be extinct in many places. Some of the states have recognized this fact this year by pro tecting the grouse for a term of years For the bob white quail, which is perhaps the most popular game bird in A merica, this has been a fairly go d year. The quail are no more than holding their own anywhere am b.many places are decreasing, but a mild winter like that of last year i; always a help to them. In hard wint ers they cannot reach their food in the northern states and whole coveys r; osting on the ground, are sometime: buried in the snow and imprisoned b: a freeze. D.DI bit. He is a poor man's game in the East, although in the West he is scarcely regarded as game at all. The rabbit tends to hold his own by reason of his cautious nature and his aptitu de for strategy. With regard to squirrels there is something of a controversy afoot. Some persons claim that they destroy so much growing corn and are so well able to protect themselves that they should be extensively hunted. Others contend that they should not be re garded as game at all, but should be treated, as pets. William T. Horna lay the distinguished naturalist and superintendent of the Bronx Zoo, is one of these defenders of the squirrel. The Case of the Squirrel. The extensive use of squirrels as park animals has caused many per sons no longer to regard them as game. Here in Washington there are a few in every park, but they seen to have a rather hard time making a living, despite the fact that they soli cit a peanut from almost every passer by. There is only one variety of large game which many Americans get a chance to hunt, and that is the (leer. It has been estimated that nearly 100, 000 (leer are killed in the United States every year. This probably means' that at least twic that many Americans go (leer hunting. Not many years ago the best deer hunting was in the West and deer were scarce or extinct in many o fthe Eastern states. This condition has been re versed. The best deer hunting is now in those states cast of the Mississippi i and north of the Ohio-in other words in the oldest settled part of the con ; tinent outside of the Spanish South west. And New York and Pennsyl vania,.two of the most populous stators in the Union, are now the best deer states.. More (leer are killed in these states than in any others. This is partly of course, because New York ;and Pennsylvaina, with their great mountain ranges, contain s news. tablish xa, VanI rnym for . ture 11istand out Store-The - t is best in M ent service 1 ~isely. i t ::ni Df Qualit of Coats,; Coat Suits, )atrons.
