It was apparent that the jail story, on the fifth floor of the building was be coining intensely hot. Three streams of water were turned m the crowd from windows, but this ipparently only serve(d to anger the row(l further and a fus11ade of bricks and other missiles fotlowed, during which more than fifty windows were smashed. The door was guarded by uniformed officers, but the rioters obtained a rope and ladder and began pouring through second story windows. Large number sof them secured entrance be fore the police checked the assault. The interior of' the big building be came a mass of flames by 10 o'clock and forced by the heat, a large part of the mob moved back from the building on the north sire. They gath ered again, however, on the south side where the heat had not become so intense.. At this point a Barbara Freitchic appeared at a window at the north endl of the lbuilding in the person of an aged woman who wildly flung an A merican flag to the wvindl and ap pealedl to the mob to desist. ,There were mingled cheers and hoots from the rioters, who yelled for the prisoner whonm they sought to lynch. it had theo effect, howvever, of giving the fire men an opportunity to run an exten s iin ladder to the fourth fleor, fronm whi h it was hoped to take the sherif. and his deputies and his prisoners who were ab')ut to become victims of *he flames. He~s Cut by Monmb. Shortly efter 9 o'clock a big fire started on the groundl floor of the couirt house andi the entire fire de partment was called out. The crowds made it dif icult for the fire department to reach the scene, or for the police to protect the firemen in their work. Several lines of hose were quickly cut by the mob.' Within ten minutes after the fire men arrived every line of hose laid by the firemen had been cut. The flames quickly mounted to the fourth floor and could be esen pouring out of the sheriff's office. Directly above is the jail where more than a 100 prisoners are confined. Frantic ef forts were being made to release them by fire escapes.
