I IRGES COMPANY OF 65 IN8IEAD OF 100 ...Columbia, Aug. 21.-In a telegram o the Secretary of War, the ad jutant generals' office today urged hat the minimum strength sof the ompanies of the National Guard be nado sixty-five instead pf -one hun Ired -men, and the temporary recog iition of the officers who organized he companies. National Guard officers and the mil tary departments of the various states are requesting that the reor ;anization of the National Guard be placed on a basis which will make it such an organization as was main tained befoer the war. National Guard officers declare that the present requirements of a minimum of one hundred men will make it almost im possible to reorganize National Guard companies, particularly in the sparse ly settled sections of the South, where protection is necessary. The Governors' conference meeting at Salt Lake City, Utah, has tJie ques tion of the National Guard under con sideration; and it is unsderstood that it will recommend that the companies have a minimum strength of sixty-five men. "In the absence of Governor Cooper, said the telegram, "who is upon at tendance upon the meeting of Govern ors at Salt Lake City, and who is thor aughly in sympathy with the provi sions of this telegraim, urgently re quest regulations providing for a min imum registered strength of sixty-five for National Guard companies. This State also requests temporary recog nition of officers who organized these ompanies, subject to later provisions, section 75, act June 3, 1916. The re :onstruction period after the war de nmands the organization of National Guard companies for protection, which :annot be done in small towns with 100 enlisted minimum strength. Ap peal to you to provide means for this protection. Governors' conference has this subject under discussion. - -o CARNEGIE HA) $50,000,000 New York, Aug. 20.-Andrew. Carne gie, who years ago announced his determination to give away his huge fortune and "die a pauper,' left an estate of approximately $50,000,000, it was learned here tonIght. The will, it was stated,' will be filed for pro bate next week. The document, which is said to con tain about 4,500 words, mentions a sco e of personal friends and retain ers of the dead financier who will re ccive 'moderate legacies." Mrs. Ros well Miller, only daughter of the steel king, is not a large legatee, it is said, having been handsomely provided for in her marriage "(lot." The approximation of $90,00,000 as thi estate's value was given out by a member of Mr. Carnegie's family, who said that the figures were based upon the last income tax return filed by Mr. Carnegie. Many persons who had been lifelong friends of Mr. Carnegie, and in whose wvelfarg the philanthropist was known to have a deep) concern, are saidl not to he mentioned in the instrument. It was in the interest of these friends and porteges, accordli ng to relatives of Mr. Carnegie, that the Home Trust Company of Newv Jersey, namedl as ex ecutor, wvas founded in 17901, and these perso0ns will continue to receive their stipulated pensions for life from a fund placedl in the company's hands several years ago.
