SHANTUNG NOW STORM CENTER IN THE SENATE The Treaty Fight Breaks With Great er Fury Over the Peninsula Peace Conference Awarded Japan DEBATE IS VERY BITTER Lodge and Norris Declare It Price Paid Japan to Sign Treaty; Wil son Supporters Approve Action. Washington, July 15.--The stormy Senate fight over the peace treaty shifted away from the league- of na irans covenant today and broke with a new fury about the provision giving r, Shantung Peninsula to Japan. In five hours of debate the treaty opponents charged in bitter terms that the Tok io Government had whoedled Shantung from China at the peace table without the shadow of a cause except the ambition of conquest, and supporters of the treaty defended the cour-e of President \Vilson in the negotiations by dleelarilg the only other alternative was failure of the whole peace conference. Chairman I.o'lge, of the foreign re lations comnittee, deelared Shantunte was "a price paid" for .1apan':; ae eeptanc'e of the leag . of nat ions. 5enator Norris, R publican, Nebraska, charged that J.:m in 1917 sec.'retly had inveigled the European Allie into a promiiise to support er Shmtungil clIaimns. -'enator Hiora:h, Republican,. 1d:h1o, ass'rted that it ine United States uut either uilerwrite the Shantunte agreement or ncept the (hlllenge of f:noth( r power, the (oull try would choose the litter ciu4rse. \on Fairly by .Japan Senator IIitcheok, Nebraska. In the end the Senate ::ropted with out a r(cord vote a resolution b)y Senator Lodge askirg the Presilent for any available information about a secret treaty alleged to have been ne gotiated between .Japan anl Germany in 1918 elboiying a1 pl)1an1 for Re'sian rehabilitation and promising .Japan's indirect, protection of Germn inter (sts at the Versaill's negot iattions.
