Wilkesbarre, Pa., June 5.-Eighty thrr.e men (lead and fifty others burn ed and maimed', many of whom will die, is the toll of a disaster in the Baltimore tunnel of the Deleware and Hudson Coal Company in the east end section of this city earty today. Seven kegs of black powder, 300 pounds in all, were detonated and the dead and the maimed were literally roasted by the superheated gas, flames following the explosion. The tragedy occurred while the men were on their way to work this morn in. Owing to their. working places being two miles from the mouth of the tunnel the men were making the trip in a train of 14 mine cars drawn by an electric motor, the powder being carried in two cars in the middle of the train. he train had penetrated the tunnel about 200 feet when August Ruddic, one of the survivors, states the over head trolley wire sagged and touching a steel powder ke gformed a short circuit. In an instant there was a shower of sparqs and a terrific blast A great sheet of flame drawn by the air current, enveloped the helpless men who were huddled closely togeth or in the cars with no possible chance to escare. Owingt to the ventilating system the sa'oke and flames were drawn inward and' the first intimation of the dis aster to those on the surface was the shrieks of anguish of the injured. Rescue corps were at once formed and the dead and iniured were rapidly brought to the surface where the liv ing were given first aid treatment Ibv physicians and then rushed to hos nitals. even the fire apparatus being used :n the emergency. Ww'n the rescuers first entered the tunnel they found the dead and dying miled in heaps in the cars and along the tunnel. Bodies of the dead were hirned to a crisp. Of the (lead, sixty nine were found dead in the tunnel and fourteen others succumbed to their iniuries at the hospitals. Only forty-nine have been identified. Among the men killed outright was James J. McCloskey, a former base ball pitcher, Pt one time a member of the Philadelphia National league club. According to the com pane's figures 143 men and boys were on the train. IN HONOR OF MULLINS BOY Torpedo Boat Destroyer is Named After Lieut. Yarboro Mullins, June 8.-Mr. Geo. H. Yar boro, of Mullins, has received a tele gram from Hon. .Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, announcing that the torpedo boat destroyer No. 314, now being built at Bethlehem Shipyards, San Francisco, Cal., had been named in honor of his son, Lieut. George H. Yarburo, Jr., who was wounded on .June 23 in the battle of Belleau woodl aind diedl on .June 27, 1918. The Secretary of the Navy request-. edl Mr. Yarbor to name a sponsor for the launching of the vessel, which is soon to take place at San Francisco. Miss Kate Burch, of Florence, wvas named b:: Mr. Yairboro. The f;4iowing is a copy of the tel egram receivedl from Secretary Dan iels: "Mr. G. H. Yarboro, Mullins, S.
