To the Editor of The News and Courier: I note with interest an item written by your correspondent Mr. W. J. Cormack, of Columbia, S. C., rela tive to crossing.s upon the Santee riv er, and appearing in your issue of April 29, 1919. 1 fully agree with Mr. Cormack as to the need of these crossings and as to its being one that affects the State very vitally, but there are some state IT'S A TERRIBLE RISK AND IT'S A WORSE "GREEN FL If 90% of engine truobles source, it would be found t underquality lubrication was SO DON'T FORGET T( --and if you'll keep "GREI ( MOTOR OIL in mind when cate, you've got maximum in lubrication. The State -Iighway Commission during the month of .June, 1918, made surveys upon the Santee river at Pinckney's landing. Murray's ferry, and Lanneau's ferry. The commission went in to the estimates carefully and passed the following resolution at a later meeting. "Be it Resolved That the State Highway Commission ap proves as federal aid projects the two crossings of the said Santee river, one at Pinckney's landing, and the other at Lanneau's ferry, based on estimate No. 3, for each' of the proposed cross- 1 ings, and will recommend their ap proval to the United States Depart- I ment of .Agriculture, provided the counties interested can -finance their proportionate part of the cost." Since the past session of the Legis lature we have formed a company styled as Santee River Crossing Com pany, and are planning a canvass of the citizens of the counties directly interested and named in our contract and in addition other citizens of the State to raise the necessary funds to meet the federal aid in putting a crossing on the Santee at Pinckney's landing. This contract is to be printed in duplicate and numbered consecutively and as soon as I receive them from the printer will begin my canvass by appointing collectors in each town in each county interested, also other towns which are interested in the pro ject, one of which is Charleston form the fact that it will bring more trade to your merchants and be a help to your traveling men outof your city. I have covered a part of the terri tory already interested in this project and have met with great encourage ment so far, and fully believe if we will get together and push that we will see results in a very short time. I have noticed from time to time different ones writing in your valu able column; about other crossings 'tpon the Santee and for the informa tion of those not informed will state that when the engineers of the State HIighway Commission made the esti mate at Pinckney's lancing it was my pleasure to help them, and they in vestigated the crossing of the old C. S. N. Railroad at Vance, S. C., and also the swamp which leads up to the bridge across the river at Fergu son, S. C., and found both of these crossings to be prohibitive as to the cost of construction compared with the other sites. Now this is not written to knock any crossing upon the Santee river and I do not wish to be misunder stood, but in view of the fact that other crossings are being named as the most available place to cross the Santee I feel it my duty to protect Pinckney's landing and put it in its proper place as to its being one of the most logical points to cross the Santee. I would like to see a crossing at all three places, namely, Pinckney's, Miurray's and Lanneau's and am will ing to do all I can as a citizen to help each one of the projects out. I have no interest in the matter :ther than to see crossings upon the river so that we can get to the west nrn part of our State and to Charles ton, our leading city. I am working upon the Pinckney's landing crossing an will give you >ther facts and information in a few lays relative to it. I believe the peo ile want the crossing and I am going Lo give them a chance to have it at Rey own expense, and as before stated 1ave no object in view other than to ee the river crossed. I have no land :o sell or he benefited by the road mnd am nothing but an ex-traveling man working on a salary and Lhrough the kindness of my employers :hey have agreed t~o let me away from work from time to time to start this project and complete it.
