The idea and advantages of aecred ited herds of cattle found to be free from tuberculosis gained wide pub Iicity and popularity among cattle breeders from the start. They appre ciate the fact that a certificate of ap proval indorsed by the State in which the herd belongs, and found indorsed by the Government, gives prospective purchasers conidence that the ani mals are tree from the diseas;e and they are in coniseq uence willing to pay a considerable advanlce in price for such acmals. D~uring the first yea r after the plan ha I been in operation, 290; herds, comn prising 9,2X84 cattle, were fully ac credited as free from tuberculosis, a nd 1,16t2 herdls having 35,053~ cattle passed one successful test in prep~ara tio n for certi fication. Joir agreements between the State and the Feleral Departmnet of Agriculture governing the applica tion for the tuberculin test, and the handling of the herd, are forwarded to each owner interested in having his herd freed of the disease, or in having it accepted as officially accred ited. It has been found by very careful experiments and practical work that tuberculosis cannot be detected to any great extent among animals by a phy sical examination. Ilerds which seem apparently healthy may be extensive ly affected with tuberculosis. The most reliable method for defmnitely de'termnini ng whether tuberculosis ex ist~s is the tuberculin test applied by a trained operator. Tbuercul in, while it is the most accurate dliagno~sis agency known to science, is safe only in the hands of a trained and skillful operator who is acqluainted with its limitations and with the symptoms it produces in the animals to which it is appnliedl. IAll Pure-Bred Herds to Be Tested. It is eroposed to carry on the ac cred ited-herdl pta n until practically allI pure-bred herds of cattle in the United States are under State and Federal supervision for the eradication of tu berculosis. Thus, it will be possible for an owner in one State to purchase cattle in another State' with the assur ance that he will receiv~e animals that F~armers I I INTER per acre. Under former condi tions, many such animals proved to be a menace in place of an asset. In adldition to the accredited-herd plan, the eradication of tuberculosis from live stock will he carried on in circumscribed areas comprising one or more counties. The disease w;il he eliminated from cattle and swine in such areas, and the campaign extend ed until it takes in encire States. In order that the work may pro gress satisfactorily, it is necessary that livestock owners cooperate to the fullest extent. The success of the Imovement forerad icating ttuberculosis rests upon the live-stock owners of the country to a greater dlegree than on any other force; whenever they are ready and willing to ''get behind"' the work, suiccess in hound to follow. -----0--- - GOOT) ROAT)S Columbia, A pril 3.-The State !!ighway Commission is frequently as;kedl by county oflicials and inter elted citizens what .-teps are neces sary in ordler to secure the large sums of Federal nmoney which are nowv available for building roads in South Carolina.
