Washington, Oct. 5.-Notice to the public to make its tax returns to the gove nment under the new .war rev enue law was issued tonight by In ternal Revenue Commissioner Roper in an interpretative statement of the law's operation. Warning was given that in no case would the government take the initiative in getting the re turns, although all returns would be verified and that everybody concerned should communicate 'promptly with the nearest revenue office. - Pp ons failing to make returns, Mr. Roper annou .ed, will be re garded as tax slackers and penalties will be enforced against them. As outlined in the statement, the follow ing persons are affected and must make returns to the government. . All individuals receiving incomes of more than $1,000 a year. All corporations, joint stock com panies and associations. All distillers, rectifiers, whole halers and retailers, holders of dis tilled spirits intended for sale or to be used for manufacturing purposes. All dealers in soft drinks, table waters and corbonic acid gas. All manufacturers of and dealers in cigars, cigarettes, tobacco, snuff and cigarette papers. All carriers of freight, express ,r passengers and all operators of pipe lines. All dealers in life, marine, inland, fire and casualty insurance. All manufacturers and wholesale dealers in motor vehicles of every kind, musical instruments, motion picture films, jewelry, boats, sport ing goods, perfumes, cosmetics, medi cinal preparati. 's, chewing gum and cameras. All proprietors of amusement places, including cabarets. All persons executing legal docu ments of any type. All trades on produce or stock ex changes and boards ot trade. All importers of merchandise. ----. THE SOUTH CAROLINA FOOD ADMINISTRATION Columbia, Oct. 8.-There are 7470 families in Clarendon county. The United States government is calling ipon each and every one of these families to aid in winning the war by saving food. Every family-mean ing men, women and children, white and black-is urged to conserve the food supply because the last' ounce may win the war. During the week of October 21 to 28 a great nation-wide campaign is to be launched by Herbert Hoover, national food administrator, when all Americans will be asked to join in the food saving mo'vemtnt. Hundreds and thousands of wvorkers will be in the field to sign up those who want to support the government. There is nothing compulsory about the move ment. It is simply a patriotic appeal to every man that loves Democracy. The minimum number of pledges expected from Clarendon county is 3500. The campaign manager for the county will have many assistants in the field andl an effort will be madle to reach every home.
