AN OPERATION AVERTED Philadelphia, Pa.-"One year ago I was very sick and I suffered with pains in my side and back until I nearly went crazy. I went to ,e differentdoctorsand they all said I had female trouble and I would not get any relief until I would be operated on. I had suffered forfour years before this time, but I kept get ting worse the more rnedlcine I took. Every month since I was a young girl I had suffered with cramps in my sides at periods and was never regular. I saw your advertise ment in the newspaper and the picture of a woman who had been saved from an operation and this picture was im pressed on try mind. The doctor had given me only two more days to make up my mind so I sent my husband to the drug store at once for a bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, and believe me, I soon noticed. a change and when I had finished the third bottle I was cured and never felt better. I grant you the privilege to publish my letter and am only too glad to let other women know of my cure. "-Mrs. THOS. McGor IGAL, 8432 Hartville Street, Phila., Pa. BRAIN AND BRAWN When Human Intelligence Tri umphed Over Brute Force. Lesson Is Drawn From an Interesting Battle of Wits Between Ohioan and a Great Big Bull. One of those unfortunate things that It would have been interesting to see, as long as it had to happen anywaiy, is reported by the H1Icksviile Tribune, which relates a rather disconcerting experience which recently befell Joe Spire, the prominent man of peace of Farmer township. Mr. Spire, who is a great lover of nature in all her variant moods, was enjoying a delightful day afield, trudging musingly along with nothing further from his mind than huge and voracious bulls, when sud denly, emer'ging from a spinney upon a fallow moorland, or haugh, he sud denly and quite against his will found himself face to face with one of these vast creatures. Mr. Spire, always a quick thinker, formulated his plan of attack at once, and without the loss of an Instant was in full strategic retreat, double-quick ing as lover of nature never double quicked before in a heeline for an ap parently stout and dependable barbed wire fence at no great distance as distances are measured under normal conditions. Meanwhile our hull, also a quick thinker, had formulated his plan also, and, swiftly putting it into 'effect, almost immediately hend downedi, tail-upped, snorted, pawed, bellowed and was in full cry. It was a wonderful race, human in telligence against brute strength, and, as is customary in such cases, human intelligence wvon, slipping desperately through the barhed wire entanglements just ds bru'te tretigthi's hot breath he gan to make itself felt on his rear breadth. Lulled to a false sense of Recurity by the position of the fence, Mr. Spire now began to resume his pleasant cornmmnion with nature when of a smlen our bull, smarting u1nder his apparent defeat and resolving not to be chen ted of his prey so easily, took up the trail again and shot bodily through the slender wvire harrier as 'if it had not been there at all. Even so, Mr. Shire did nt lose his presence of mind fo.r one inomejnt, butegrl slipped bacek t hrou;:h the tenen at a point a few rods ov~e the gap made by its gr~m pursuer, who, profIting by his recent experience, dlid not pause~ at all this time, hut thundered through the entanglements, his cruel fang" never more than three feet to remur ward of our hero's natty hunting troum sers. And thus the strnane battle of brain against brawn coat irned indefinitely, as it begana to seem to Mr. Spire, brain slipping through the fence amri brawn crashing through behind him until at lamst brain had wor :ed his way to a stouter and nont raesparennt harrier at lie e'xtremae edge of the maoo(rlandl, or haungh, nnd, throwing nil his reman ing energies into one last frantie effort, ciaunhlered over just in timec to esenpe lhe eag'er and slavering jaws of our colossai heast, who now in very truth was folil completely. We se'l'dom have noted so strIking an Illustration of the ultimate superiority of human intelligence to brute force, although, as Mr. Spire laughingly re markced when ou r neeredhited represent ative arrivedl on the scene, the ulti mate sometimoes seems an unconsiomi ably long time coaming.-Ohio State Journal. That Trousers-Pocket Joke. The fellowv who invented that joke about wives burglarizing the pockets of friend husband while that innocent and trusting lobster slumbered on should have had his invention Censored before it was permitted to occupy a place among jokes of that period. I am not always eager to champion the wife's cause.. for that would be robbing married life of its spice and seasoning, but I must and do denounce this jokemonger, this defamer of our noble married wom an. There is a large class of English women, writes a London correspondent, who have to keep their own homes go ing, but who manage to take time to help to ease the war strain. She visits soldiers' wives and families in dark and dirty streets, as do most of her friends and hundreds of other women. She never goes empty-handed. To pay for these luxuries she dispenses with help in the housework, rising earlier in the morning to do it herself. - Here is the experience of one: In the course of her visit to a hos pital a tall, sad, young Scotchman won her sympathy. He was grievously wounded, but what he seemed to suffer from most was homesickness and a wild longing for his own people, es pecially his mother. "She can't afford it," he said when asked why she did not visit him. "She could get a half fare warrant, I know, but even then she's not accustomed to travel, and she'd be lost In a strange town." This gave her an idea. She would ask the mother to cane to Leeds and stay with her ! She met her at the sta tion and took her up to the hospital, where the excited boy lay. For a few days the old Scotch wom an stayed with her, and then returned to Scotland full of gratitude and de light at having seen her son. She was the first of many guests entertained by this warm-hearted Euglishwoman. Sol diers' wives cane, sometimes bringing with them a baby-once or twice it was a hahy the father had never seen before, born while he was at the front ; saildiers' sisters, sweethearts, mothers, all poor women who could not affordI to have comae without her offer of hos-. pitamlity. They arrivedl tired, anxious and sad, and she comforted them and cheered thei, anid they went away hap fier to know thamt their dear ones had so kind a friend at huad. For Old LinoLaim. An 01(1 linoleum, if not wvorn into holes, may be refreshed and made al most as good as new with little trou le. First, be sure that it is stretchedl and tacked as closely as possible. Th'len paint it all over with two coats of any good wansh paint, letting the first one (iry before supplementing it with the second. When this is qu'te drIy, give the floor a coating of orange shellac. Af'ter this Is (dry, go over it with a se(ond~ coat . This gives an ex cellent finish to thme floor and will make the linoleum not only look wvell, but add greatly to its wearing qualities. An oil mop will keep it clean. The Need of Caution.
