In Great Brit ain as a result of recent social legislation enacted to meet and to allay this unrest, there are 14,000.000 of workers who are Insured by the government against unemployment and dis ability caused by accident or sickness. There are hundreds of thousands of aged men and wo men drawing pensions from the state, while 500,000 people ev ery week receive medical relief for which the government pays the bill, and during the past year 230.000 mothers not only receiv ed free medical care in giving birth to their children. but in ad dition were granted a considera ble cash bonus. Yet in the face of these facts the demands of the proletariat grow apace and em ployers are kept in constant dread of labor troubles.-Rev. J. A. McCallum. Philadelphia. THE TOILERS. We are so weary of the day, The pressure of the world is great; A thousand things on either hand Demand attention, soon or late. The harvest fields Indeed are ripe, And earnest laborers all too few. And we are willing, but we faint Before the long day's toil is through. Oh, let us fold our hands awhile And close our eyes against the light; bet blessed silence balm our ears, Lest all be lost in sudden night. ALfter a rest we'll work again, Please God, with strong and eager hands; With clearer brain and braver heart We'll meet the stress of life's demands. -Emma A. Lente in Farm Jour nal. CALUMNY. (By R. G. WEATHERSTONE) he concentrates are usually bought - the protein which they ontain oy also contain carbohydrates and , which ar valuable as food con huents. rafs make up the food value of i purchased concentrates. To the mer they may have another value 1 ch is not usua~ly considered. We take cotton seed meal and from i feeders' standpoint we find that a contains about 840 pounds of pro a, the most valuable food consdtu We will take 840 pounds of protein d scientists tell us that It contains per cent. of nitrogen, the most val ble element In commercial fertilizer. ten per cent. of 840 Is 134.4. 'hus we find that In every ton of tton seed meal we buy we get 134.4 shels of nitrogen, which is worth t least 15 cents per pound. The nit- r ten in the ton of cotton seed meal I me, if purchased as commercial fer- , t ier, Is worth $20.16. Then if we add pounds of potash and 40 pounds of osphoric acid, which the ton of cot- t i seed meal also contains, -at five nts per pound or $4 additional, 3 L.h brings the ton of feed to $24.16 I lue for the fertilizer alone. if the meal Is fed to the stock and B manure carefully saved It is po- I Ae to save 70 per cent. of the ferti-< er value and also get the full feed r value of the material. Seventy r cent, of $24.16 ti $16.91, indirect I lue of a ton of cotton seed meal. 1 We may estimate the indirect or trogen value of any feed stuff If e protein content is known by sim finding 16 per cent. of the protein i Ad caling it nitrogen. Then the sont recovered in the manure is m 70 to 90 per cent., according to e age and kind of aninml to which it fed. A young animal will retain we of the nitrogen of the food than mature anIal A cow will retain we than other annimals The economy of live stock on the rm is largely due to the fertilizer on the farm from their feeding.
