When walking through the streets in ny large town in Chile one is immedi tely struck by the fact that church ildings are always undergoing re airs. One day you will pass a church which >r weeks has had about six ladders stng agast the walls. Then an her day you will find that they haye een changed to the other side. This >nstant changing of ladders goes on ear in and year out, but no Use ever ems to be made of the ladders,~ ough. perhaps, a new brick or a bit' Splaster will occasionally be added: >the building. There would seem. nowever, to be a er real reason for the presence of tese ladders. The Chilean govern tent, in fact, levies a tar upon church ildings, but only when they have een completed. In order to evade us tax, therefore. Do church ever has een completed.I The lawv surely might be altered, en. for the eternal presence of these .dders-certainly an ingenious idea :>es not add-to the appearance of the uildings or to the comfort of pedes 'lans in the streets.-London Answers. GEi'EST OF ALL1 Land Show at Conservation I Exposition Will Set a New Mark WHAT A BUSINESS MAN SAID Nothing Like Display in This Depart- C ment of Big National Exposition Ever Has Been Attempted in the Country Before-Lessons for Farm ers. E D. Stratton, land and industrial agent of the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific and the Alabama GieAt Southern railroads, paid his first 1 visit a few days ago to the grounds t u;on Wvhich the big National Conserva tion Exposition will be held in Knox-. vile from September 1 to November 1 s of the present year. He went to Knox- h ville with a party of other railroad b men. After his visit to the grounds, after he saw what had been done and what was being done In preparation for the exposition, he expressed him- 9 stlf in this wise: "To say that I was most favorably t Irmpressed would be to put it mildly. I had no idea that such a site for an s exposition could be found anywhere in thie country. I had no idea of the ex teni. and character of the buildings al- ' ready up, and I was delighted to see . such good progress being made in the c eiection of the big new buildings." a "Will your roads be represented by a land exhibit?" he was asked. t "They will," he replied, positively. "8hey could not afford to be uni-epre seuted." This was a hard-headed man of busi ness speaking. He had seen. That was enough for him.* His decision was t made. Greatest of All Land Shows. At this early date this statement can be made positively and without fear of-' cortradiction: THE LAND SHOW AT THE NA TIONAL CONSERVATION EXPOSI TION IS GOING TO BE, NOT ONLY THE GREATEST LAND SHOW EVER SEEN IN THE SOUTH, tT THE GREATEST LAND SHOW EVER BEEN ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES. Land primarily is the basis of all wealth. Much has been learned about laind in recent years, many lessons of Ine'alculable' benefit to the tillers of -,th soil have been taught. Many les scris- remain to be learned; there Is still much in the land and in the meth I oe, of its best cultivation still to be taught. Land shows are, compara tively speaking, a new institution. They have done much to educate the, people. The conservqtion of the soil of the United Staies is one of the greatest projects un'dertaken in this twentieth century of progress. And the Land Show at the National Conservation is going to exemplify the niost advanced thought along these Ilies. Building Is All Ready. The new Laud Building on the beau tifu! exposition grounds of the Na tional Conservation Exposition is com-I pleted. It stands on a terrace; it i beautiful In design, beautiful in execu tion. In the rear of the building is an auditorium that will seat 3,000 per sons. The building is spacious and T:ss constructed especially for the' Land Show and all that goes with it. Ora the lower floor of the big white: building the land companies and the land departments of the various rail roads will have their displays. On thet typer floors\ will be the educational exhibits, and these will include the ex- I hitts of the different experiment sta-c tions of the United States Departmenta of Agriculture in- the Southern states. Mr. Farmer, here are a few of the things thiat are, going to Interest youa when you pay your visit to Ahe Na tional Conservation Exposition and the Land Show In the Fall: - You are going to be shown in a most stniking ind convincing manner howt best to maintain and incre'ase the pro- 1 dvction of your land. I Lessons of the Show. You are going to get Ideas on how to improve the grade and yields of plant and animal products. You are going to see the soil of the Southern country, and so arranged to teach you many valuable lessons. You will see exhibits that have to do with the impovei-ishment of the soil. You are going to see the best and most modern methods of crop rotation illustrated.f You are going to see actual demon sti ations of the way in which you can plsnt and raise little known products and thus increase the earning capacity of your lands. ~You are going to see What is the use of going farther? The sentiment that the Land Shgw at the National Conservation Exposition will be the biggest and best ever- held stil stands. ' The railroads are preparing to maker very extensive exhibits-the most ex tensive they ever have made at a Southern show. EXPOSITION THOUGHT. il The expositions of the past were as r songs of achievement at the end of a s good day's work. The National Corn c srvation Exposition will be a living I r.d tangible promise of a still more b glorious to-morrow foreordained by the a ne action of to-day. 11 BRING & JOB V TO THE TLIF R il LIST BIG .ive Stock Show Will Be Fea ture of National Conser va-tion Exposition 14,090 IN PRILES OFFERED bject of Manager of Live Stock De partment Is To Make Display Abso lutely Clean and Stimulate Breeding of Better Class of Animals in South.
