As an encouragement to the pupils who show tal nt as speakers, others who have made a perfect re ord in attendance and deportment, some kind of prize ill be awarded. It is a truth that good records made n school become apart of one's life after school and vill be the means of making a boy a reliable man, al rays punctual and prompt to the-call of duty. Six prizes will be awarded to contest speakers, and our for attendance and scholarship. Those offering >rizes this year are, Mr. S. R. Venning, Manning Fur 'urniture Co., and Mr. S. L. Davis. Among the colored people, R. A. White, $5.00 for iupil making the best record in first grade; Alex Tin .al, $5.00 for pupil making highest per cent. in schol rship; Ed. Hatfield, $5.00 prize for contest; Augustus "ollins, $2.00 for contest prize. Several prizes will be ecured from white friends. The management of the colored school here has een encouraged by many who have given small dona ions of some sort. We are pleased to announce the gift f a large map from the office of the County Superinten ent of Education, five of the latest bulletins from the Inited States Department of Agriculture, latest map of outh Carolina showing Jasper and Dillon counties rom Mr. Watson, Secretary of Agricultue, of south ,arolina, five volumes of books from Dr. C. B. Geiger, Ll1 of this shows that the right sort of education for Legroes is being encouraged and supported by the lead rs of the superior race. Among the colored people, Alex Tindal and Ed Valker, took the lead in the Baptist and Methodist ,hurches respectively, in raising $25 to assist in build ag flues and making other improvements. THE SPEAKERS. Ample accommodations will be made for white eople who wish to attend the commencement of the olored school. The speakers are among the best in he State. Prof. Wilkinson, President of State College, 5 one of the most influential educators among negroes, 7hile Rev. M. D. Lee of Rock Hill. is a general officer a the Methodist Zion Church, he is a foremost educa or and holds the reputation of being one of the great st orators of his race. Mr. Charlton DuRant, of the anning Bar, needs no introduction. He, like Capt. V. C. Davis, is a man of high esteem and a speak r who can entertain an audience with much ease. INDUSTRIAL TRAINING, For three years a course of industrial training or aore properly putting it, domestic science, has been tad in the negro school here. The work proceeds along ,line per a schedule and is conducted by a graduate of ooker Washington school, without any expense to the ax payers of this school district. The same teacher is sounty Supervisor, and many other schools have been eached. The pupils are taught to make useful articles, nd do fancy work, how to cut patterns, darn and titch, and make door mats out of shucks, table baskets ut of reed and raffia. The negro people have been trying to get away rom the memories of past times that are sweet to the ecollections of the "old people," the melodies that we se to sing on the plantations. We are going to give ur hearers a treat in songs that are real negro in dia act and rehgion, yet set to music that is charming and eautiful. We have secured a number of song books rom Hampton Institute most of them entitled "Negro Polk Song," "Nursery Rhymes," and other melodies. eversl strong choruses are to be had all of which will se pleasing to the commencement goers.
