A charming story is told of Pasteur, the scientIst, and Victor Durny, who4 as minister of public instruction z er tfie second-empire. The author of the "Hlstoire des Romains"' was a4 geat friend of Pasteur. Moreover,4 tey were near neighbors, one residing Ithe Rue d'Ulm and the other in. the nue de Medicis. One Thursday, the4 dy of the sittings of the academy, the4 go friends met at acab stan~dby the u membourg. "Are you going to the intitute?" asked the minister. "Yes," 4 swered the savant, and they both etered the same cab. Arrived at their4 jorney's end, Durny tendered a five fanc piece to the cahmnan, who, of 4 urse, had no change. Then said 4 urey: "Keep the coizr as a souvenir4 this memorable ride. . You have iven the great'est savant of the cen tury." Next came Pasteur's turn. He t his hand in his pocket and with -ew a five franc piece, which he heded to the "cocher" with the re ark: "Take care of it.. You have4 riven the greatest minister of the see-4 ad empire."-Londonl Globe.4 'hen Kurds and Turkomans Fight, Describing a feature of a fight be-4 teen Turkomanis and Kurds In Per a, a traveler says: "The Turkoansn ho always fight on foot, were -ulti ately defeated with heavy loss, and any prisoners were taken, and still ore 'captives were released. Among te Turkoman prisoners was an old an of ninety, who said thlat he had jned the expedition in order to se ure a' new wife. The damsel In ques tn camoe up dluring the interrogatory nd brained her captor with a stone. uring these raids, past and present, he Turkoman appeared to have en yed a great and permanent advan tae in that neither Kurd nor Persian ver carried off their womeni or chil ren owing to their ugliness. The urkomans, on the other hand, pre rred Persian to their own women nd thus had a keen incentive, apart fom the purely commercial aspects to ngage in these forays, in which no ercy was ever shown to the aged or eary."-Cicago News. The Trade Winds. The constancy of trade winds Is due o the permanence of tile conditions hich rule them. As the heated air at he equator ascends surface winds set t from north and south and, ning, ascend in their turn and flow off in posite directions. As the velocity of e earth's revolution from east to west is much greater at the equator an at the poles, wind blowing along s surface to the equator is constantly rriving at places which have a higher velocity than Itself; hence it is retard d and must lag behind, and under the Ifluence of two opposing forces it Is ompelled to take an intermediate di ection, so that what was originally a north wind Is deflected and flows outhwest, while what started as a outh wind becomes northwest. From he great service they have rendered o navigation these reliable winds arel cld trade winds. His Black Suit. He~ was~ not a good card player.
