Supervisor McFaddin and Commi sioner Thomas gave their views as to the amendments to the road l..w. and asked that the delegatioi give to the county :t better system by which -he; roads can be put in a better conditiou and the county run on a better busin basis. Mr. Thomas nmd- some sug::e Lions which will be carefully considered. namely. the raising of the commutation tax to 85 instead of q3. as it is now. He takes the position that $3 with a Ohoice of six days work does not tend to ::ive I to tne county funds to have work doue or to furnish the work necessary for thc keeping of good roads. IIe" also thinks it would be best to give to tihe coMMis sioners dtscretion in the disbursement of the commut-tion, and not contine the disbursement -.o the township in which it is paid. It was suggested by Mr. J. E. Ken nedy. of Turbeville, that provis1on be made for a *wheel tax.- to charge a stated amount for each wheel used on i the public roads, and to make it a crime Ifor persons to plow into the roads. Mr. S. M. Haynesworth was present o talk ove-- the fish and gamne laws~and' he wants Clarendon exempted from the1 operation of the Act passed at the last session, and to changze the time fixed in te "game Ac" so that deer can be hunted from August to February. Clerk of Court Barron suggested that the law be changed so as to have, thej jury box Siiki by :- jury comnmision made of others besdes the cie-ru, auditor and treasurer as is ncy required. M r.l Barron stated his reason for desiringi this .change which we think has min.. Magistrate Fleming from New 7.ion came before the delegation to ask that Ithe law relating to road defaulters be made more definite and clear. he claim ig that it is the opinion of the m-tority ' the magistrates, and they are soa Ivied by lawyers, that the law does lAL give magistrates any authority to im pose a penalty. It was stated to him that the violation of the road law was a' misdemeanor and that the magistrates. had the power to fix the penalty within their jurisdiction: however, to avoid any future misunderstanding the law1 be'made so clear that e-ren a magistrate1 will not be misled by a lawyer who probably has received a fee to give out such a construction. Mr. Fleming also wants the delegation to consider the matter of rnore compensation, and to provide pay for them when they are compelled to attend "the big vour.. The delegation listened to the v:ews, Iof those present on the various subjects and were much impressed with the attt ude of .\r. Mitch Epps who made a special and an eloquent plea that the laws forbidding fish trapping be re pealed. He contends that this privilege Iis "God-given and tuan has not right to interfere with what the Lord has pro vided His cnildren with for their sus tenance and comfort and their ipleasu re." All but the Senator are new in leg is-, laion and the suggestions made will be carefully considered. FEach member is anxious'to do those things which wi:! be of benefit to the many without re gard to his future political dei~ires. We are satisfied the delegatiou will wertt together harmoniio:'ly, whether there is much or little done: in fact. we k of but little to be done at this sessiorn other than to try and have correcte': the bad Acts of last year.
