The plan of the league is to cooperate with the police aod city authorities and lend its aid .o any society whose bu.-i ness it is to operate against such ev ils. The meeting repressed itself strongly against the crimes of the negro race in .anning and passed resolutions pray ing the city of .\anning to enforce the vagrancy law. One of the most striking features of the meetwg was the strong attitude it took against loafing and idleness amongz the younger men of that race. M\avor pro temn S. Oliver O'Bryan gave tine encourage ment in a forceful address to the men and pledged that the city would give all necessary aid to this. *'A movement in the right directon." There were many white people present. All colored churches cooperated in this meeting. On .\onday evening there was held in the court house a mass mneeting of the citizens of the town for the purpos" of discussing with the municipal oflicials the inancial cordition of the town. It was shown that the annual income of the town is *8,)0. 8,245' fromn taxes and s1,555; from licenses. The fixed expense. exclusive of any work, amounts to $415.1t per muonth. This is spent in the following mnanne'r: Police $100 00, clerk 825.00, mayor 25.0. chief :ire department $16.637, engineer $11.00J. driver $Z5.00, horse feed $ld0.00, electric lights $12.5 During thbe past year $4320 was spent as- the town's por tion of paving and in putting in the street crossings. In 190$ real estate was purchased to the amount of $1400.00 making a total amount expended in the past two years for pernmanent imnprove ments of.$52.06i. The total indeb'ted ness amounts to $91530.00) the major portion of which is owing to The Bank of \anning. A fter a full discussion of the situation, it was unanimously adopt ed that it was the ,.en'se of the meeting that bonds to the amount of $00. be issued. and in accordance with that resolution a pentsion will be circulated asking the cotunci! to order an election to vote upon th2 bond proposition. The town authorities went tuity into the inanial condition, and explaitued in detail exactly where the money is being snent.
