It is reported there will be a new dry goods firm established in Manning be fore the 1st, of September made up of hustling young men. Labor contracts drawn under the new contract law now on hand at THE *TIMEs office at 5 cents a piece, or 50 cents per dozen. Captain and Mrs. W. C. Davis have *written to friends here, from St. Paul, Minn., reporting a glorious time, and they are now at Yellow Stone Park. Let there be a big meeting here next Saturday to make arrangements for the old soldier encampment. Everybody should take a deep interest in these arrangements. Mr. A. J. Rigby has recently pur chased a "Red Devil" Ford automobile which runs as smooth as an electric car. This pretty car makes "Phonza" awfully nice with the girls. The great picnic at Beulah comes off next Saturday, at which there will be a number of speakers. In all probability every candidate who can possibly find the time will be at this picnic. The Al colu Railroad Co. will run special trains to connect with the A. C. L. Timmonsville's Gala Day July 29th is to be a big day in Timmonsville. Horse racing, base ball and exhibition drill. The building movement in .Manning is getting somewhat contagious, as we hear there are quite a number contem plating the improving of old homes, and the building of new ones. There will be spent in the nears future not less than $125,000 in Manning, which should breathe new life into the nostrils of trade. We direct attention to three more can didates cards in this issue, E C. Thames for Magistrate at Manning, E. D. Hodge for Sheriff, and W. A. Dyson for Coroner. The time is getting short, and there must be rmore candidates or the funds for running the primary will be short. DJo not be bashful, if you want an office, to say so, you are not going to get it, un less the voters want you. There seems to be considerable dis satisfaction among some people over the present title to the school house lot, and covert threats are being made to enjoin the trustees from beginning work on the building until the title has been changed from its present owner ship to the district, without reser vations. Then too, these persons in sist upon tbe name of the school being changed, most of them however, never have been enthusiastically in favor of the improvement. If the-Foreston section continues dis covering curiosi~ties, it will become known as the land of freaks. Mr. C. T. Ridgeway brought to Manning and turned over to Dr. To'dd, a glass jar containing several snakes together with the shells of the eggs the snakes were hatched from. A son of Mr. Ridgeway pjlowed up a nest of snake eggs, they were the size of large bird eggs, and he destroyed all but three, these he -put in a fruit jar without water, and screwed down the top. In the course of a few days three small snakes were born in the jar, and are growing right along. It is wonderful how these rep tiles can thrive without air, food or Married last Wednesday evening a Panola, by Rev. J. B. Kershaw, .Tr.., a the home of Miss Fannie Holladay. th bride's aunt. Mr. E. B. Brown and Mis Belle Holladay, daughter of Mr. S. P Holladay. The groom is one of Man ning's popular young men, and is a lax student. The bride is wellknown an< has a number of warm friends. Mis Holladay for a long time assisted he father in the oflice of Superintenden of Education. They will make thei home in Manning. Mr. A. Davis, Jr., and daughter o Washington, D. C., are in Manning with a view of bidding on the nev court house and school house. Mr Davis is connected with two of the largest contracting firms in the coun try, they make public buildings a spec ialty. He recently finished a handsom< court house at fockingham, N. C., an the citizens presented him with a mas sive silver-headed cane, made of Jeru salem palm. In looking over the plan: Mr. Davis gives it as his opinion that both the school and court house are e. cellent, buildings which will be appre ciated. Mr. Davis and daughter are stopping at the Hotel Central. The St. Paul, Minn., Dispatch con tains the following item. Perhaps it's just the Southern way, but it's the most delightful way in the world-I mean, of course, the way the Southern visitors speak of St. Paul, Mrs. W. C. Davis, Manning, S. C.. one of the two women who came with the Carolinian temple, was spokeswomar for a group of Southerners at the Ryan this morning. "Your city is charm ing. There's new beauty every way I look and new interest every day. I have traveled about a good deal, too. I've seen all our cities from New York to Foreston. and I like St. Paul the best of them all." And oh for a type writer that could reproduce Mrs. Davis soft, rich voice and South Carolina accent. A Patriotic Call. To the Sons of Confederate Veterans: Pursuant to the call made last week we had a small meeting of the Sons of Veterans last Saturday. I believe every patriotic son of a Confederate Veteran in Clarendon county will be willing to do whathe can towrads help ing the old veterans have a good time on their encampment at Brewington Lake on the 6th and 7th of August. Acting under this belief I have decided as Commander of our County Camp, after consulting with some of our patri otic sons of veterans, to appoint several committees, and request them to meet in the hall of the Woodmen, over Levi's store, at Manning, on Saturday the 25th, inst., at 11 o'clock, for the purpose of organizing and going ahead to make the encampment a success. I hope every man whose name is on a committee, as well as other sons of veterans, will be present next Satur day. Committee on grounds and comfort I. V. Plowden. chairman; E. C. Cos rey, B. 0. The committee on grounds and com ort are supposed to look after getting ome temporary tables, see about plenty f good water, provide shelter in case f rain and anything which is procur ble that will add to the comfort of the eterans. The committee on refreshments are upposed to provide plenty of ice lem >ndade. The fish committee will know whas s expected of them. The committee on transportation are upposed to arrange means of transpor ation from Manning or Wilsons for hose veterans who are unable to get way to go to the grounds. The committee on finance are sup osed to solicit and receive contribu tions to defray any expenses which ay be necessary to carry ous the hole plan of making the encampment a success, and I hereby nominate and apoint Joe M. Brapham as treasurer f that committee, who will receive all ontributions sent to him and see that ame are expended under the proper uthority. The old Confederate Veterans, at heir last meeting in the court house, hen they decided to have this en ampment expressed a desire that we join with them, so that every son of Confederate Veteran who did service for the Confederate States is invited to e at tife encampment with well filled askets. Come and bring your wives and daughters. Mr. James M. Windham is our eml ient secretary and will enroll the ames of all Sons of Veterans who are eligible to membership. The ranks of the old soldiers who did ctive service are getting thiner every year, and we have an opportunity of giving them a good time, perhaps the last like occasion some of them will ever attend. It is a great privilege we ave. Let us come together and do what we can. Yours sincerely, J. H. LESESNE, ommander of Camp Henry Lesesne, Sons of Confederate Veterans of Clarenpon County.
