Mr. Albert Galloway of Clinton, is at home visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Ga loway. The roads all over the tounty are in a wretched condition as a result of the extremely bad weather. Mr. C. C. Langston left last Monday. for Columbia, where he will spend sev eral months in a business college. Dr. Clarence Traylor, a licensed graduate pharmacist, is now engaged at the Arant Company Drug Store. After this week THE TixES editor will have a Columbia letter each week during the session of the legislature. Mr. Ben H. Harvin of Harvins spent Friday in Manning, and his friends here were delighted to see him in im proved health. There is a rumor afloat that "Big one" is soon to take unto himself a rib. He says there is no fun playing a game without a partner. Miss Gertrude -Bradham is now at Asheville, N. C., where her health is fast improving. We hope she will soon return ~her robust self again. Rev. A. R. Woodson is in Summer ton this week assisting the Rev. Porter in conducting a revival service in the Presbyterian church at that place. Rev. Tolar of Summerton, S C., will preach in K. of P. Hall at Pinaewood, S. C. on Sunday night at 7:30 o'clock, Jan. 19, 1908. All invited to come. Miss Armstrong, of Charleston, vis ited the Nisses Thames here during the week-end. She was on her way to Salem, where she is to have charge of the Smith school. Married in Charleston last Wednes day, Mr. Claudc S. Breedin and Mrs. Margaret Barbot. The bridal couple came to Manning to visit Mr. Breedin's parents, and returned to their home Saturday night. The proposition to abolish the magis trate's office at Foreston is not approv ed of by the people of that section. They claim that the odice being there is a ~preventative of crime. It is their only political protection. -We understand there is some proba bility of a special school d istrict being formed in Harmony township with a four mill levy. That section would be greatly ben'elitted by good school poli tics. It would enhance the value of the lands, and otherwise be helpful. The installation of the W. 0. W. offi cers for the ensuing year took place last nmght, Past Consul Commander Chariton DuRant oresiding. After the business meeting was over the Camp repaired to the Gem Cafe where an ex cellent spread awaited them. The Nethodist congregation at this place is preparing to make extensive improvements about the church build ing. There will be two new Sunday School rooms added, and the spire that was damaged by fire due to lightning several months ago will be rebuilt. The home of Mr. T. Leslie Bagnal, near Foreston, was destroyed by fire last Friday afternoon, and very little of the contents was saved. Mr. Bagnal was insured in the Jenkinson & Horton agencv $900 on dwelling and $100 on furnit~.re. The insurance wvill not cover the lOSS. The agitation for the repeal of the lien law has had the etfect of holding up the advancing business among our merchants. They are waiting to see what the legislature w.ill do with the law. We are of the opinion the lien law will be repealed at this session, but all liens taken before the lawv is re pealed will stand the same as if there had been no repeal. As shown by the County Supervisor's report published last week large sums of money were oaid out for road work~. b-ut the ~most of'this has gone for nought for the heavy rains of last week put the roads in worse condition than they were before any wok was done. In some iolaces the roads are impassable except at great risk and it is impera tive that something be done to remedy the damage~ at the ear-liest possible Who was it said Fridav is an un lucky day? There is nothing to t. on last Friday our frieuds remembered THE TIES editor with especial kind nesses. _Mr. H. L/1B. Hodge.of Dutant, sent hitii a dozen fat. plutmlp and juicy patridges. _Mr. RZ. C. Dr. Fowler has recently returned from an exte!ded tour of the East. where he visited many scenes of the early trials and martvrdoms of the Christian church It depends upon the pill you take.De Witt's Little Early Risers are the best pills known for constipation and sick headaches. The Newberry Observer of the 14th. savs: "The uaegroes in Newrberry insist th'at Earnest Gilliam did aot commit suicide in Manning, accordina to the findings of the coroner's jury down there, but that he was killed by a woman. There may be an investiga tion." One thing that might be re vealed by an investigation is whether Ernest Gilliam and Will E'erbe is one and the same person. aEid if so, why so? There can be uo doubt about the one known here as Will Herbe shooting himself. It is the best remedy known to-day for dys pepsia and indigestion and all troubles arising from a disordered stomach. Take KODOL to-day, it .s pleasant, prompt and thorough. Sold by W. E. Brown & Co. On last Thursday night some dastard went into the field on .he "Clark place" which is rented by Isreal James, and burned up 55 bushels of corn and 6 two horse wagon-loads of hay and odder. That the fire was the work of an incendiary there is no doubt, as the igns of kerosene oil were distinct the next morning. There is a strong sus picion pointing to a source and steps ave already been taken to ferret out the devil incarnate who would, undEr the cover of night commit such a foul deed to gratify a revenge. Murder will out, and so will a crime of thig character. No community can afford to tolerate a man be he white or black whose heart is so black that he can ratify his revenge with a torch. If the evidence is obtained every means known to the law will be used to rid this community of such a character, and we can say further, a clue has been btained. When you want the best. get DeWitt's Carbolized Witch Hazel Salve Tt is good for little or big cuts, boils or bru ises, and is espeeally recommended for piles. Sold by WV. E. Brown & Co. Poor Charlie Willie has had them gain, and was placed in jail last Satur ay night on awarrant. This Chinaman as been acting very queer for some ime, and it was presumed he was un er thc influence of some opiate or de oction which gave him something like eirumitremens, about three weeks ago e had one of these spells and seemed o have gotten over it, but last week it ame back whether from liquor or opi m we know not, but his conduct was such that he was regarded dangerous to himself and the property in which he lives. A prominent citizen had the Jdge of Probate to begin lunacy pro eedings, Sam Lee a Chinaman of Sum ter was telegraphed for, and on his ar ival Char-lie was taken to jail to await the decision of the examining doctors. Sam Lee and the writermade an exam ination of Charlie's effects, and there ound about $715 dollars, of which $709 was deposited in the Bank of Manning in the name of " Sam Lee for Charlie Willie" the balance was in niekles and dimes which at the suggestion of the writer Sam Lee kept :to defray inci ental expenses. It has been arranged with the uthorities to keep the unfortunate Chinaman in jail for about ten days to be treated by Dr. A. S. Todd, and if in hat time his mental condition is re stored he will be released. In the :eantime Lum Quey of Charleston aother Chinaman will manage the laundry. E. Brown & Co. When the news of the action of about twenty six men at Summerton, with regarc~ to the court house proposition was published last week, fired the pro gressive citizens of the county, and petitions hav-e been signed in several sections urging the Representatives to stand by the action of the county mass meeting. That mass meeting was ad. vertised, and its purposes stated in the notice or call, the number present was not many, bdit there were citizens from nearly e'very section, it was not a meet ing composed of a few from one neigh borhod, it was as much a representa tive convention, as was the one held the year before which action was ac eeted by the representatives. That the majority of property owners in this county endorse the action of the mass meeting which adopted a resolution by a vote of 26i to 7, urging the Represen tatives to make provision for a new court house, is clear, by the large num ber of signers to the petitions circulat ed since to Summerton meeting. Summerton school district is paying a tax of its own voluntary making, and that town deserves to be commended for its spirits of enterprise, but because they have taxed themselves for local improvements, it is no reason why they should attempt to throttle the progress of the whole county by taking advant age of the circumstance of having in that community two of the Rlepresenta tives. Summerton is only a part 01 Clarendon, and the gentleman living in that section who are members of the legislature are not unmindful of the fact that they represent Clarendon coun t as a whole, and notone school district. I~f these gentleman are disposed to be influenced by the Stummer-ton meeting which expressed opposition to the court house project. we take it they will stop) and consider the wishes of the people of the county as exuressed in the large ly signed petitions'that will be submit ted to the delegation. There are some opposed to the build ing of a new court house, but these same people are opposed t~o all public imrovements, if left to them every public school house would be closed~our children would suffer for the need of a primary education. They are opposed to any and everything that will cost a dime. whether it is for public improve ments, schools. churches, or anything else that is unselfish. This class sim ply hoard what they make. it does nei ther them or anyone else any good: happily howeve-, the majority believe Iin proress. Some Interesting Facts. County Auditor BuraesA has furnish ed us the following facts and figures relative to the work in his ofilee for the inforn-ation of the legislative dele gation, and the same will likely prove highly interesting to oor readers gen erallv: In ~185 the total amount of taxable propetry in Clarendon county was S1,485.172: in 1907 the totLl taxable proper'v amounted to 853,922, 715. nearly a thiree-fold increase. The number of polis.;in 1S85 was 2.5S:' in 1907 it wais 5.1 -; ln1 no dogs were taxed, while last, year the number returned amounted to 2,595. fn 1885 there was uot a special school district in the countv. while now there are twenty five special school districts with levies from I to 9 mills. In 185 and until recent years the tax books closed January 15th and by February 15th the treasurer could get otT the double entries. etc.. and turn the books over to the auditor. As it now stands the treasurer collects taxes till March 15th and turns his book over to the Auditor about the first of May which gives him about. two and one half months less time to zet up treas urer's and auditor's duplicates than formerly. in 1885 it took the county auditor about two-thirds of his time to get out his books. In 1907 it takes his entire and he is obliged to have competent help for at least two months. The auditor's salary is now about :SOO. less two months hired help, amounting to about $80, and horse hire, board. etc.., for one month taking returns. 8.0: leaving about $680 net salary for doing nearly twice as much work as was required twenty years ago.
