Thames spent several days in Charleston last week. Our local Chinaman says "dis Mel ican carnival meka too much fluss." Miss Dell Riser of Greenville is in Manning visiting her sister, Miss Nina. Mr. Jercme P. Chase of Florence is visiting his uncle Mr. J. W. McLeod. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Slaughter have returned home from a visit to Danville, Va. Quite a crowd took in "The Wheel of Love" in Sumter last Wednesday night. How can good work be expected of us this week when there is a carnival right at our door. Mr. J. D. Gerald, of Summerton, for merly one of 'Manning's merchants, was here yesterday. Monthly meeting of the Ladies Mis sionary Society at Mrs. E. S. Ervin at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon. Have you got your registration cer tificate? If not be sure to get one on the 2nd, at the court house. Among the most welcomed visitors to our town is Mr. R. L. Burnes of Texas a former citizen of Manning. There will be e meeting of the W. C. T. U. Monday afternoon Dec 2, at 4:30 at the residence of Mrs. W. G King. The Presbyterians are having night ly .prayer meetings, preparatory to their communion service next Sunday. Mr. Hilb one of Darlington's mer chants is in Manning visiting his brother-in-law Mr. Perry!Krassnoff. J. H. Lesesne Esq., has been invited to deliver the address of welcome for the town, to the colored Methodist con ference. Do not fail to secure registration cer tificates next Monday in order to vote on the school bond question. Thanksgiving services at 11 o'clock Thursday morning at the Presbyterian church, but no prayer meeting Thurs day night. Judge James Aldrich of' the second circuit, on account of ill health has ten dered his resignation. The State loses a good and upright Judge. Married this morning at 10:30 at San tuc, Union County, by Rev. A. N. Brunson, Mr. JT. B. Lesesne and Miss Gertrude Gee. . Be careful in taking clearing house certificates, there are men going over the country with paper resembling money that have the appearance of these certificates. Suit has been brought by Mr. D. W. Alderman against the county treasurer for the recovery of the income tax paid by him, This case is for the purpose of testing the constitutionality of the law. There was a large party of young people that went to Sumter last Wed nesay to hear Paul Gilmore in the "Wheel of Love" and the girls came back "dead stuck" on that "darling man." Preaching every day next week at the Presbyterian church in the fore noon and at 7:30 in the evening. The Pastor is expecting one or two Colum bia ministers to assist. Everybody is invited. Col. W. J. Bryan says that "Presi dent Roosevelt is democratic in spots," but according to views entertained by the frenzied financiers,- the country should to work to knock out those "spots." To float $30,000 worth of bonds bear ing 5 per cent. interest, it will only take a levy of about three mills. Is there a t~axpayer who would object to paying three dollars per thousand for good school facilities? There is a block of granite on the sidewalk in front of the residence of Mr. W. P. Legg, that it is.no empty wooden box, but a true-true solid block of granite stone can be vouched for by Mr. C. L. McElveen at Rigby's store. Died last Sunday about two miles east of Manning, Mr. Frank Brewer aged about 65 years. The~ deceased was one of Co. L 23rd regiment in the war be tween the States. The funeral took place at Oak Grpve Monday. The servant problem will be solved in this town next week, as nearly every lady will be entertaining conference guests, while "de wite woman" that gives her employment and an oppor tunity to "tote a pan" is in the kitchen cooking. The annual conference of the African Methodist Episcopal church with Bish op Coppedge of Philadelphia, to preside convenes here Dec. 4th and already the indications aaie that the attendance will be very large. The colored people of this community are noted for being good entertainers, and in this instance they are spreading themselves to hold thiir reputation. We would direct the attention of our readers to the large advertisment of Strauss-Rogan Co., of Summerton. This hustling concern is going to revolu tionize things in the w'ay of disposing of goods. When Rogan starts he is a mover, and his sale will mean a whole lot :o the trading puablic. Rogan be lieves in making his town wake up while the neighboring towns are en Again we urge the voters of the Manning school district (No. 9) to look up their registration certificates: and i: they cannot find them to apply for re newals at the court house Monday Dec. 2. It is important that every voter in the district is supplied with a certificate. Mr. Walter Logan of Charleston one of the most popular men on the road came down the pike, yesterday. and hit Manning in time to hear the Italian carnival band play macaroni, and it made him home-sick and yearn for dear old Charleston. If I had J. D.'s mnoney said old man Swain, I would make everybody happy from Oregon to Maine; You don t need money. just be free, Give your family Rocky Mountain Tea. Dr. W. E. Brown & Co. At an entertainment at Workman last Monday evening for the purpose of raising funds for the church, among the delightful features of the occasion was voting a cake, but the greatest of all was Mitch Epps and Ned Kennedy kissing each other for one dollar, they kissed, the money was paid, and strange to say both have survived. Miraculous! Babies and children need prom't at tention when suffering from coughs and colds. The best remedy for mothers to use is Kennedy's Laxative Cough Syrup It taste nearly as good os maple sugar, it contains no opiates, and it is laxative and drives the cold out of the system by gently moving the bowels. Sold by W. E. Brown& Co. The Johnny Jones carnival company now entertaining the public on the court horse square, is the largest of the kind that has ever visited this town., they have a number of attractions, be sides the usual cane racks, . punching bags, confetti, candy wheel'and every thing else to create fun for the young. The band is splendid, its music alone is worth a visit to the carnival, the mu sicians are Italians, born musicians and they play twice a day morning and ev ening, come out on the street and give a musical exhibition which is a treat. So far as we have seen anybody can at tend this carnival and bring their folks along; it is clean. no gambling, and nothing to shock the most modest. There is nothing but fun on the outside and within the shows everybody gets full value for their money. While the carnival is here let everybody come and enjoy it. Mr. E. L. Mards who conducts a gen eral merchandise business at Pope, Va. writes: I had chills last June and got down in very bad shape. My system was so completely run down tnat I was scarcely able to atiend to any work, I took 3 bottles of Rydale's Tonic and felt like a new man before I had finished taking it. It did me more good than anything I ever found and my health was good all last summer. W. E. Brown &Co. / Vote for the School. The qualified voters of school district No. 9 which is the district that em braces the town of Manning -.,re called upon to vote on the question whether or not to issue bonds for the purpose of building of a first class up-to-date school building in the town of Man ning. The present school building is entirely inadequate, it is unwholesome, poorly ventilated and not at all in keep ing with a town of Manning's size. A new school building is an absolute necessity, and the issuance of long term bonds is the easiest and best way to secure the money to build it. Tbere are some taxpavers who express a wil ingness to vote for the bond issue but hey object to the building bearing its resent name, in our opinion this is a flimsy excuse, for it matters not what the building is called, the school house is the matter of importance. But in rder to relieve those objecting to the ame of the builing the trustees have ecided that in case the people vote in favor of a bond issue the property will e transferred from the town to the district, and be known as "The Man ning Graded School," this will remove the objections of those who are opposed o perpetuating the name of a citizen who, throughout his career in this ommunity was public spirited, and did much for the town and the commu nity generally. It is to be hoped that that the voters of this school district will look to their interests and cast an affirmative vote for this progressive ovement. There are some who are pposed to voting for a bond issue be cause it means adding a little more taxes, they are opposed to being taxed for school, or any other purpose, they ant to enjoy the privileges and bene fits that taxation brings, but they are pposed to paying for it. We need nos argue the advantages to be derived from an up-to-date school uilding, every intelligent person real izes what it means to a community, and e hope the sentiment for it will be so strong that even the opposition will give way and make it unanimous. Let s urge the men of Manning and the rest of this school district to turn out on the 17th day of December and show o the world that we appreciate the value of educational facilities, and that we propose to give our children as good onportunities as are given in other towns, even smaller than Man ning. Come to the Carnival. Bedlam broke loose last night on the ourt house square. The town tnrned out, and there was a general mix-up, boys and girls, old maids and school tea 3hers,married men and widows, married women and anybody, and there you are. Hilarity and confetti were joyously fea sting and making merry. It was a scene tha.t beggared description, amid the "hurry, hurry" of the megaphone, the screeches of "try your luck boys" at the cain racks, "every turn of the wheel wins a box of Lowney's candy boys" the crash of music, the shooting of pistols to draw crowds to the animal show, and the flitting about from place to place of the lady with the paroxide hair, all and more, was a continous round of gaiety. Everybody was in the game, it was a rip, roaring, jolly good time for all and for mighty little cost. The show started Monday night. oore than doubled last night, and will ontinue to increase- in attractions and rowds until the tents are take n down on Saturday night. It is but just to the management to a that we have never met a more gentlemanly showman than Mr Johnie Jones. He does not stand for any gam bling, short-changing, or any immoral or 'egrading exhibitions. His aggre cation of amusements, are all clean, and bear the scrutiny of the most pru dent. No lady need have fear of seemg~ things her cuiosity does not crave for, and no man need fear of getting kid napped and dragged into bad company. Let the crowd continue to increase, not only from the town, but from all over the country, the show is a little worfl of pleasure, that everybody may enjloy without much cost. Tomorrow night, as a celebration of thanksgiving the marnificient band will give an open air concert, there will be a special pro gram of the choicest musical gems, this alone should attract large crowds. Notice. Members of P.-newood Lodge No. 124 K. of P. are requested and urged to at tend the next c:onv'ention which will meet on Wednesday evening Dec. 4th atS o'cl ock. This will be a very important meeting as election of officers for 1908 will be voted upon at this meeting. several ap p'ttions tolbe read and acted upon and the delegates to the 5th district meet ing which will convene in Manning S. C. on Tuesday Dec. 10th 190'7. to be ap pointed. So it is hoped every member will be at this meeting, Dec. 4. Citizens Meeting. The taxpayers of Clarendon county are called together in mass meeting at the court house in Manning Monday the 2rd, day of December. for the pur pose of meeting with the members of the gene-al assembly to discuss mat ters pertaining to the affairs of the county. The main object of the meet ing is to learn from the taxpayers their views on various matters of legislation, and whether or not they would be wil ling for their Representatives to make provision for a court house.
