"Davis- & Co., has 'accepted a position with the Croswell Grocery Co., in Sumter. Found in the public rsad last Mon day by Willie Gibbon of New Zion, a spectacle case, containg two finger rings. The owner may have same by calling at THE TDrES office. We direct attention to the advertise ment of D. Hirschman in this issue. Mr. Hirschman has caught the Bar gain fever, and is offering to sell sea sonable goods at reduced prices. .At Clark's warehouse last Friday 7vlr. H. D. Gibbons of New Zion sold :308 pounds ot tobacco and received an average of 22+ cents per pound. How is that for the Manning tobacco mar iket? Died suddenly last Friday night at the home of her neice, Mrs. J. C. Mc Clennaghan in Florence, Miss Eliza Billups, aged about 74 years. The body wvas brought to Manning for in terment and the funeral took place Sunday morning in the Manning cem etery. Died last Wednesday at the home o1 her parents Mr. and Mrs. Martin Mims, near Silver, Mrs. Emma Briggs, wife of Mr. H. S. Briggs, aged about 41 years. The deceased leaves three children. Rev. M. A. Connors con ducted the funeral at Calvary church~ Thursday. One of the most absurd lies of the campaign is being told to the effec1 that "Appelt came to Manning witi Potter's raid." Appelt was seven years of age when Potter came through this country, and we hardly thirik he need ed a nursery along with him. No, this dirty lie is for no other purpose that o decive the unthinking.. An invitation has been received to THE TIMES editor from members of the Paxville Democratic club, asking him to be at Paxville next Saturday morning at 11 o'clock to explain some matters affecting him in the coming election. The invitation is accepted, and if nothing prevents he will be glad to meet as many of the people of that section as would care to hear him. According to the letter of C. M. Davis circulated over the county advising the people who to vote for, it would appear as if C. M. Davis intends for the Davis family to rule Clarendon's politics for ever. We think the people know whether or not they want a continuance of the Davis rule, we hardly think they want a rule by proxy anyway. We note our Turbeville correspon dent at Turbeville says there is a bet of $100 on the race for the senate, and it is to be regretted that such is the case. The news of the bet reached us the day after it was made, and perhaps this accounts for the activity of a can didate for the legislature and his sons, and they are not very scrupulous either intheir work to win the $100. Died at Asheville, N. C. yesterday morning, Col. John M. Knight of Sum ter, aged about 40 years. Col. Knight had been in failing health for a long time. He was prominent throughout the State, not only as a successful news paper man, but as a Knight of Pythias, having served as Grand Chancellor of the State, and he was for several years County Chairman of the Democratic party of Sumter county. He taught school in this county and had many friends here. We have been informed by a gentle man from the Fork that it is reported "Appelt scratched Tillman." It is false, nor did he scracth any candidate who was without opposition. The re port is on a par with the dirty lie that "Appelt came to Manning with P.otter's raid," and it would not be surprising to hear that "Appelt deserted Washing ton's army, was killed in the Mexican war, was with John Brown when his body was hung on a sour apple tree, gave birth to twins and was finally sera to the penitentiary for trying to lead a decent life. Nothing we hear will surprise us at this time. Appelt lead in his own club, over two other residents of Manning, and he received a majority in the three boxes at Manning over all three of his oppo nents. This should satisfy any reason able man that Apoelt's political and private character is good. There are 24 Democratic clubs in Clarendon county, Appelt lead in 12 end tied at 1, Richardson lead in 9 ,and tied at 1, Kennedy lead at 3 and Galluchat at 3. A study of the official returns will show exactly how things str.nd. The fact of Appelt leading in the number of clubs is a convincing answer to those who attempted and are still attempting to mislead the, people, with regard to his party loyalty. Petit Jury. Editor Manning Times: Please e~llow me space in your paper, to sy that I am rofoundly grateful to the people of Clarendon for their hesty support in the recent election. Any words that I can think of, seems trivial compared to what I feel, but I would say this: If I live to see the first of January 1907 and am inducted into the Auditors office,I shall prove by my actions how grateful I am. Actions, speak louder than words. The very best service of which I am capable be longs to the people ofClarendon county. Yours to command, ANDREW P. BURGEsS. The Better Way The tissues of the throat are inflamed and ir rita te d; you cough, and there is more irrita tion-more coughing. You take a cough mixture and it eases the irritation-for a while. You take SCOTT'S and it cures the cold. That's what is necessary. It soothes the throat because it reduces the irritation; cures the cold because it drives out the inflammation; builds up the weakened tissues because it nourishes them back to their natural strength. That's how Scott's Emulsion deals with a sore throat, a cough, a cold, or bronchitis. WE'LL. SEND YOU A SAMPLE FREE. SCTT & BOWNE * a"rt** InformatiOn for Teachers and Trustees. Columbia, S, C., Aug. 28, 1906. To the County Superintendent. MY DEAR SIR:-We shipped you by express on yesterday, a good supply of of a bulletin containing a list of the adopted text books with Reading Cir cle course. I hope you will, as nearly as possible, put a copy into the hands of every teacher in your county. I should like also for you to furnish them to all of the book depositories. Allow me to call your attention to the use of Johnson's Primer. It is marked "Optional" in the course of study. That means if a child is pre pared for the first reader, he is not re quired to use the primer; but if he uses the primer at all, the Johnson's Primer is the regular adoption, and must be used to the exclusion of all others on that subject. Please call this to the attention of the depositories. Of course you understand that the contract with the publishers is to be strictly erforced. Teachers are not to have their pay warrants approved un less they use the adopted books. It will be to the advantage of the patrons to have this rule strictly enforced while the exchange period lasts, in order that all of the old books may be taken uo. If this is done, the enforcement of the rule will be easy after the ex change period expires. Please let all of the teachers, and prospective teachers, in your county understand that the next regular teach er's examination will be Friday, Sep tember 21st. Please make them un derstand also that no one is to be al lowed to teach in your county, either as principal or assistant, without a cer tificate properly registered in your of fice. It is your duty to refuse to ap prove pay warrants to teachers who have no certificates. I believe your bond would be liable if this rule is vio lated, so no one can blame you for do ing your duty. Sincerely yours, O. B. MARTIN, State Supt. of Education. Teachers' certificates can be issued upon diplomas from certain colleges, specified by the State board of 'educa tion in this State First grade certificates may be re newed, but second grade certificates cannot be renewed. S. P. HOLLIDAY, Co. Supt. Education. Suspects Arrested Officers Barwick and Owens arrested two negroes who gave their names as l Ed Service and John Gambie who, in zeneral appearance, answered ,the de scription of the two chaingang convicts who killed Guard Stello in Charleston about two weeks ago, and made their scape. The arrest was made at the corner >f Silver and Divine streets, where they were loafing about. They were brought up to the guard house and examined. They claim to have come to Sumter from Manning last Saturday and worked one day onj the railroad and have since worked around the ice factory. It is not be lieved that they are the murderers of Stello, but they will be held until they are identified and their residence in ~anning established. If they are not :caped convicts they are probably v.grants, who should be put to work on the chaingang.-Sumter Item Aug. 30.
