AYCOCK, Administratrix. ior. S. C. Feb. 16. 1906. AVERAGE HUMANITY. Most People Are Not Very Good Nor Yet Very Bad. What do we mean by a good man or a bad one, a good woman or a bad one? Most people. like the young man in the song. are "not very good, nor yet very bad." We move about the pas tures of life in huge herds, and all do the same things at the same times and for the same reasons. "Forty feeding like one." Are we mean? Well, we have done somei mean things in our time. Are we generous? Occasionally we are. Were we good sons or dutiful daughters? We have both honored and dishonored our parents, who in their turn had done the same by theirs. Do we melt at the sight of misery? Indeed we do. Do we forget all about it when we have turned the corner? Frequently that is so. Do we expect to be put to open shame at the great day of judg ment? We should be terribly frighten ed of this did we not cling to the hope that amid the shocking revelations then for the first time made public our littde affairs may fail to attract much notice. Judged by the standards of humani ty, few people are either good or bad. "I have not been a great sinner," said the dying Nelson; nor had he-he had only been made a great fool of by a woman. Mankind is all tarred with the same brush, though some who chance to be operated upon when the brush is fresh from the barrel get more than their share of the tar. The biography of a celeb-ated man usually reminds me of the outside of a coast guards man's cottage-all tar and whitewash. -Essays of August:e Birrell. Bears the Tha Kind You Have Always Bought Bignture 0 RUSSIAN PROVERBS. Roguery is the last of trades. Without cheating, no trading. Every fox praises his own tall. A debt is adorned by payment. A good beginning is half the work. Every little frog is great in his own bog. Trust in God, but do not stumble yourself. Go after two wolves and you will not catch even one. If God doesn't forsake us, the pigs will not take us. The deeper you hide anything the sooner you find it. Be praised not for your ancestors, but for your virtues. Send a pig to dinner and he will put his feet on the table. Kodol Dyspepsia Cure Digests what you eat. It became necessary at one time in a lawsuit to know the full name of the darky. The not un natural supposition that Tim stood for Timothy met with a flat denial. "No. sah!" exclaimed the negro. "Mah name ain't Timothy. It's What-timor ou-ouis-w'e-poor-mortals-be Jackson. Dey jest calls me Tim fo' sho't."-Suc cess Magazine. Angelo's Verdict. Once a painter notorious for plagla risms executed a historical picture in which erery figure of importance was cop)ied from some other artist, so that very little remained to himself. It was shown to Michael Angelo by a friend, v'ho begged his opinion of It. "Excel lently done," said Angelo, "only at the day oC judgment, when all bodies will resume their own limbs again, I do not know what will become of that histor eal painting, for there will be nothing left of it." CASTOR IA For Tnfants and Children. The Kind You Have Always Deught Beerfs the Signature of .How Exclamations Originate. "Halloo" and "hurrah," which are among the exclamations in common use, can be traced to curious origins. The author of 'erbe Queen's English;' tells us that the p~eople of Carnwood forest, Leicestershire, when theywh to hail any one at a distance c-all out not "halloo," but "nalloup." This. he takes it. is a survival of the times when one cried to another "A .loup! A loup" or. as we should say. "A wolf! A wolf :" "Hurrah." according to high authority, is derived from the Slavonic "huraj," "to paradise," a battle cry which voiced the prevailing belief that alH soldiers who fell in the fight went straight up to paradise. - Pearson's Weekly.________ In Bohemia eourtships are abnormal ly long. In that country engagements frequently last from fifteen to twenty years. Bears the he Kind Yolu Have Always Bolught Signatue of The One to Brag. Kennedy's Laxative Honey and Tar Curs allcoughs, nd expels coldS from praising the Lazy Man. It must be admitted that some of the best work that has lived has been done by indolent men. This Is espe cially true as regards literature. The finest description of a sunrise was written by the poet Thomson in bed. Coleridge was one of the most indolent of men, yet his work is, of Its kind, unapproached. One of the most im portant improvements in the steam en gine was due to the indolence of James Watt. Many other examples inight be quoted; but, as a general rule, it is fairly correct to say that work which is the outcome of meditation or pro longed observation is best performed by peoplh whose natural indclence makes them careless of the strife and bustle In which an active temperament would tend to immerse them.-Pear son's. Eczema, Tetter, Salt Rhenm, Itch, Ring Worm, Herpes, Barbers' Itch. A curious custom prevails among Roumanian peasants. When a Rou manian girl is of a marriageable age, all her trousseau, which has been care fully woven, spun and embroidered by her mother and herself, is placed&ln a painted wooden box. When a young man thinks of asking to be allowed to pay his nttentiens to the girl he is at liberty at first to open the box, which Is always placed conveniently at hand, and examine the trousseau. If the suit or is satisfied with the quantity and quality of the dowry he makes a for mal application for the girl's hand, but If, on the contrary, the trousseau does not please hiin, he is quite at liberty to retire. The largest mass of ice in the world Is probably the one which fills up near ly the wbole of the interior of Green land, where it has accumulated since before the dawn of history. It is be lieved to now form a block about 600, 000 square miles in area and averag Ing a mile and a half in thickness. Ac cording to these statistics, the lump of ice Is larger in volume than the whole body of water In the Mediterranean. and there is enough of It to cover the whole of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland with a layer about seven miles thick. If it were cut into two convenient slabs and built up equally upon the entire surface of "gallant little Wales" It would form a pile more than 120 miles high. There is ice enough in Greenland to bury the entire area of the United States a quarter of a mile deep.-London Globe. Afflicted With Rhumatism.
