"In a certain church in Colorado Springs," said an Oregon clergymau, "there used to be a queer old, crusty character, a Scot who was noted for his profound knowledge of the Scrip tures. I lectured in that church one evening, and after the lecture the Scot and I and some few others fell into conversation. "I was urged to put the old man's Scriptural knowledge to the test. I was urged to question him and to let him question me. Ile would get the better of me-that, every one said, was certain-but I had my doubts and, turning to the Scot, said confidently: "'I will try you, my friend, with the grand, leading, insurmountable ques tion, IHow long did Adam remain In a state of innocence?' "The Scot auswered: "'Till he got a wife.' "Then, with a grim chuckle, he went on: "'But can you tell me, sir, how long he remained after' " Cure for Sore Nipples. A plan that will sometimes destroy a large number of rats is to fill a barrel partly full of water and cover it with an inch or so of meal. A hole Is bored in the barrel a little above the meal, and the rats enter, sink through the meal and find a watery grave. In catching rats In steel traps great care is required to deceive the rodents. Traps need to be well covered and ev erything done to avoid raising the sa-s piclons of the "varmints." Often when rats refuse to eat poisoned bread and butter they may be baited with poison ed crackers, cheese or meat. Rats are shy and gamy creatures, but It is pos sible to "make game of them." Doctors Could Not Help Her. "I had kidney trouble for years," writes Mrs. Raymond Conner, of Shel ton, Washington, " and the doctors could not help me. I tried Foley's Kid ney Cure, and the very first dose gave me relief and I am now cured. I can not say too much for Foley's Kidney Cure." It makes the diseassd kidneys sound so they will eliminate the poisons from the blood. Unless they do this ood health is impossible. The R. B. Loryea Erug Store, Isaac M. Loryea, Prop. Baffed. The word baffled now has a mean ing entirely different from that ap plied to it 300 years ago. It is now un derstood to mean thwarted, foiled or disappointed, but then it was applied to the process of degradation by which a knight was disgraced. A baffled knight was one who had been pro nounced guilty of conduct unbecoming one of his order and had accordingly been shorn of his plumes, his sword was broken before his eyes, his knight ly robe torn away, his spurs cut off with a cleaver, and after being public ly chastised he was declared to be baf led. The word is used in this sense by Shakespeare and other writers of that time. La Grippe and Pneumonia. Pneumonia often follows in grippe, but never follows tbe use of Foley's :oney and Tar. It cures la grippe oughs and prevents pneumonia and onsumption. Ask for Foley's Honey and 'ar and refuse any substitute offerrd. NIr. G. It is a fine thing to know when to let go. Many a man holds on too long. It s better to jump overboard than to go sown withi the sinking ship. King of All Cough Medieines. Mr. E. G. Case, a mail carner of Can on Center, Connecticut, who has been in the U. S. service for about sixteen years, says: "We have tried many rough medicines for croup, but Cham berlain's Cough Remedy is king of all, nd one to be relied upon every time. Mrs. Bayard Taylor tells an interest ing story of Thackeray in her memoirs "On Two Co'ntinents." The Taylors. met Thackeray in London soon after their marriage. Mrs. Taylor writes that she found "confirmed in his person| the characteristics which I had guessed at from his works-a warm heart under the mask of scathing uatire. On the occasion of a small dinner which he gave us he said to my husband, after the gentlemen had rejoined the ladles i in the drawing room: 'By the bye, I must give you a weddlng present. What shall It be?' Then going to an, etagere he took down a silver Inkstand and gave it to his friend, in spite of the evident displeasure of his yongest daughter, usually so amiable, who ex claimed with all the naivete of her fif teen years, 'Oh, not that one, papa!' This magnificent dis play is rarely seen by other eyes than those of savages, but sometimes it has 4 been the good fortune of a naturalist to witness It when among the wild beauties of the mountain fastnesses.
