This heading means a great deal, for it is no easy task to per fect every department of an establishment like ours, to handle the volume of trade that we have every reason to expect will be ten dered to us this season. September so far has shown a very lib eral increase over the corresponding period of last year, and if "Coming Events Cast Their Shadows Before THIS PROMISES TO BE OUR BANNER SEASON. It is indeed gratifying to note the unusual increase in the vol ume of our business, and to say that we appreciate the confidence reposed in us, gives but a faint idea of our feelings. We regard the interest of every person that does business with us as ours, and will do everything in our power to protect them. We cannot give away gold dollars for ninety cents, no reason able person expects that, and wherever you find a merchant'offer ing staple merchandise at less than cost, his object is to attract you to his store with a view of selling you something the value of which you are not familiar with, and make up his loss on the lead ing article. as well as a comfortable profit on the other items. Nothing of that character will. be tolerated in this store; we de spise it. Our business is based upon a legitimate percentage of profit, and that figured on- as close a basis as is consistent with in telligent merchandising. It'is true, we sometimes sell goods at and below cost, but that only occurs at the end of a season, or when we have erred in buying something that did not prove to be as good a seller as we expected; or bought too freely of certain 4 lines, then we make our loss as quickly. as possible, for experience has taught us that the first loss is always the lightest. Our ambi tion ought to be satisfied for we are said, by those who are in a position to know. to be The Largest Retail Dealers in the State. And while we might be satisfied to remain just in the position we -are, that would be practically impossible, we must go backward or forward, and our mercantile pride will not permit of a backward step, and each year will find us in the front rank, seeking new fields, new customers, and keeping fully in touch with the spirit and progress of the city in which we take such pride. A story about the original John Wal ter of the London Times when beset by a strike of compositors and pressmen is told in London Opinion. On a cer tain day the "copy" fell short by half a column. There was none at hand ready to 1ill up with, and time passed. With the inspiration of genius Mr. Walter laid hold of a column of print er's "pie" and prepfed it in the most expeditious way, so that it might pass muster for an article in a foreign tongue. He popped it in with a few lines of introduction, declaring this in comprehensible mass to be a paper in some Hindoostanee dialect, translation of which would follow in the course of a few days. No "translation" ever ap peared. Ten years after Mr. Walter was on a visit to a noble earl in Che shire, where he was introduced to a most learned pundit and oriental schol ar. "Ah," said the latter, "I have long and ardently wished to solve the prob lem which has puzzled me for the last ten years!" And drawing from his pocket a tattered old copy of the Times he pointed out to the embarrassed pro prietor of that Journal the alleged Hin doostanee article, which, he confessed, had baffled his most strenuous and as siduous efforts to make anything of, although he had tried every known dia lect of the language. How Mr. Waltef explained the matter is not recorded. In Time of Peace. 'In the first months of the Russia-Ja pan war we had a striking examole of the nesessity for preparation and the early advantage of those who, so. to speak, "have shingled their roofs in dry weather." The virtue of prepara tion has made history and given to us our greatest men. The individual as well as the nation should be prepared for any emergency. Are you prepared to successfully combat the first cold you take ? A cold can be treated much more quickly when treated as soon as it has been contracted and before it has become settled in the system. Cham berlain's Cough Remedy is famous for its cures of colds, and it should be kept at hand ready for instant use. For sale by The R. B! Loryea Drug Store. Wine and Wills. The Law Magazine and Review tells an odd story of a Haimburg merchant who had.five sons who were all ardent teetotalers. the merchant was con trary minded, and, to. rescue the mis guided young men from the error of their obstinate ways, he directed in his will that each of the five should on the day of the funeral drink a glass of wine to his memory in some. public place, adding as a condition subsequent that if any of them should refuse to drink the enjoined glass his share of the Inheritance should be forfeited and divided up aiong the more complai sant brothers, but if all should refuse the whole famly property should go to charities. No other testament so odd on the sub ject of wine is recalled except that-of a total abstainer who left a fine wine cel lar, a recent legacy to himself, to his heir, with directions that Its contents should be poured untasted on the ;round. Loryea, Prop. The Life Was in Rim. Daniel O'Connen once unraveled a :ueer plot in a will case. ,Witne'ss aft er witness swore that they saw the ocument duly executed. At last a con stantly reiterated expression caught the lawyer's attention, -"The life was In him," over and over repeated. "By the virtue of your oath, was he alive?" e asked one witness. "By the virtue f my oath, the life was' in him," he was answered. Then O'Connell turned to the man and very slowly and very solemnly said, ."Now I call upon you. in the presence of your Maker, who will some day pass sentence upon you for thisevidence, I solemnly ask you and you answer at your peril-was not there a live fly in the dead man's mouth when his hand was placed upon the 'WillW" ~Cornered and -pale with fear, the witness 'confessed that this had actually happened. His enemies claimed that the rod was the cause of the great drought of 1757, 1758 and 1759, and upon the matter being report ed to Vienna it was ordered to be taken down. Bilious Attack Quickly. Here is a story about Sir Patrick Talbot, sergeant at arms in the house of lords. He had been private secre tary to the great Lord Derby when prime minister and afterward married one of his daughters. One day when a large party was present at Knowl sey Lord Derby burst out at table with the remark, "It's a curious thing one never knows what a lot of. flools there are in England until one becomes prime minister." Thereupon Talbot, at the other end of the table, said, "Yes, and one never knows what a fool a prime minister may be until one'be comes his private secretary." Lord Derby's reply was, "Thank you, Pat." Dundee Advertiser.' CASTORIA For Tnfants and Children. The Kind You Oave Always Bought Bears the Signature of Newtou's Telescope. Newton fashioned a concav0 nirror from a 'mixture of copper and tin, which gives a surface with almost the luster of silver. An image of the star was produced In the focus of this mir ror, and then this image when exam ned by a magnifying eyepiece permits the astronomer to study the star at what is equivalent to a greatly reduced distance. Such. Is the principle of the famous erecting telescope which bears the name of Newton. The little reflect or which he constructed Is still pre served as one of the treasures of the Royal society. The telescope tube had the very modest dimensions of an Inch In diameter. It was, however, the pre ursor. of a whole series of maginificent instruments, each outstripping the oth er In magnitude.. - How to Avoid ?neumonia.
