I'E SUNDAY SCHOOL: .ESSON 1, FOURTH QUARTER, INTER NAT!ONAL SERIES, OCT. 1. Pext of the Lesson, Dan. v, 17-30. Memory Verses, 29, So-Golden Text, ps. xxxiv, 16-.Commentary Prepar ed by Rev. D. M. Stearns. Copyright, 1905. by American Press Asociation.. Dr. Weston says that we have in the scriptures the account of the conflict )tween Christ and Satan for man and nan's inheritance, the earth. It is true ISO that everywhere in the book we Lce God working or the devil. In this ook of Daniel we see God working in tnd through Daniel and his compan ons and also by holy angels. On the ;ide of the devil we see such as Bel ;hazzar and his companions and evil Lngels who hindered Gabriel when on is way to Daniel. I do not wonder hat the wisdom of this world wbuld ike to get rid of this special book, for a three instances it sets forth the in Lbility of learned men to understand be things of God. In chapter ii they :ould not tell the dream, in chaptir Iv hey could not interpret a dream, and a this lesson they could neither read tor interpret four words plainly writ en on the wall. Before Daniel interpreted the words Le had a little sermon for this wicked ing, the last he would ever hear, for n that night he was slain (verse 30) na went to his own place (Luke xvi, 2, 23). The name "Most High God" verses 18, 21) is first used in Gen- xiv, S, 19, in connection with this other itle, "the possessor of heaven and arth.'" As such God ruleth in the :ingdom of men and giveth it to whom oever he will (Dan. iv, 17, 25, 32, 34). aniel reminded Belshazzar that this lost High God.had given his father all he power and dominion that he pos essed, but that because of his great ride, boasting that he had built Baby on by his own power and might (ft, 0), God had by very severe measures umbled him and taught him to know he true God. Belshazzar knew all this, but instead f profiting by his father's experience .nd humbling himself before God he ifted up himself against the Lord of leaven and contemptuously blasphem d God. He did not believe that "a aan's pride shall bring him low" (Prov. :xix, 23), perhaps did not know it, nor hat God resisteth the proud, but giv th grace unto the humble (Jas. iv, 0). low apt we all are to fall to glorify im in whose hand our breath is and those are all our ways, in whom we ie and move and have our being, who tirecteth our steps (verse 23; Acts xvii, 5; Jer. x, 23; Proy. xvi, 9). The word o Israel is a good word for us: "Thou hlt remember all the way which the ord thy God led thee;. * Beware at thou forget not the Lord thy God" Det. viii, 2. 11). We are'here to hon *r and exalt Christ, but never self nor tumanity. The person who wrote these words pon the wall was not visible nor even he hand that wrote. but just'n part of be hand-the fingers (verses 5, 24). It ras not the messenger, but the words, hat God wanted seen. It is not the ireacher, but the word of God, that toes the work of God. The writing up n the tables of testimony given to loses was done by the finger of God Ex. xxxi, 15; xxxii, 16; Deut. ix, 10), .d the same finger wrote on the' round when He was here as God anifest in the flesh (Joh~n viii, 0). The time of the dur'ation of all theking oms of this world is fixed by God, and e time that the Babylonian kingdom hould rule was made known to Jere iab before Judaha was carried captive 'er. xxvii, 4-7). It is only when the ingdoms of this world shall have be ome the kingdom of our Lord and of Is Christ that the world shall see a *ingdom without end (Rev. xI, 15). The ord weighs our actions, our paths, ur spirits (I Sam. ii, 3; Isa. xxvi, 7; ~rov. xvi, 2), and estimates all things .t their true value in His sight. The vidow's two mites were of more value. cording to His valuation, than all the ifts of the rich that day. It is pos ible that the seemingly good works of is redeemed people may be only as Lay, wood and stubble in His sight, t only to be burned up (I Cor. iii, 14, 5). When it is God who worketh in L, both to will and to do of His good leasure (Phil. ii. 33), then the works il stand: all else must perish. The visions of the second and the eventh chapters, the one given to a can of this world and the other to )aniel, a man of God, are identical and et forth clearly the succession of these :ingdoms. In chapper ii Babylon is the Led of gold' and Medo-Persia the reast an~d arms of silver. In chapter 1 the su.me two are represented by he lion with eagle's wings and the iear with the three ribs in its mouth. chapter vili the second of these two s represented by a ram with two orns, a harmless, domestic animal, uggesting thefriendliness of the Medes .ad Persians to Daniel's people. Note rom chapters vii, 1; viii, 1, that these wo chapters precede the one of our esson in the order of time. Note also hat to a man of the world like the :ing of Babylon power is something' irecios as gold or silver, but to a man if God waiting for 'the kingdom of lod the present governments of earth re like devouring wild beasts, which e nations themselves acknowledge by isplaying upon their banners the lion, e bear, the dragon, the eagle. Daniel was honored before men be :ause he honored God (I Sam. ii, 30; Fohn ii, 20), but Daniel sought the tonor that cometh from God only (John -, 44) and still awaits (Dan. xii, 13). >oor indeed is he who, like Belshazzar, Las a kingdom, but no Saviour. But LW indeserbably rich is he who, like )aniel, wa'..s for the everlasting king orn of cer Lord and Saviour Jesus 3hrist. The Colonel's Waterloo. Colonel John M. Fuller. of Honey Irove Texas, nearly met his Waterloo om liver and kidney trouble. In a re et letter he says: "T was nearly dead f these complaints, and although I ried my family doctor he did ine no ood; so I got a 50c bottle of your great slect-c Bitters. which cured me. To be born within the sound of Bow Bells has been a distinction for centu ries. The famous old bells which have rung so long over London, it may not be generally known, are situated in Cheapside, where they may still be seen and heard. The street which pass es beneath them is today the busiest In all London and is whoily given over to business, so that few people today are actually born within the sound of the famous bells. How to be Plump. Most people constantly suffer from loss of appetite, especially for break fast, an unpleasant taste in the mouth, low spirits; irritability, with a heavy, dull headache, biliousness, sick head ache, blotches on the skin, lack of en ergy and a feeling of weariness. all of which are due to constipation. Consti pation is the forerunner of indigestion, sluggish liver and nervousness, and it is of the utmost importance that the bowels should be gently regulated by a reliable aperient. Dr. Kzing's Blood and Liver Pills meet this want. 25c at Dr. W. E. Brown & Co.'s. Monuments of Ears. There are many of these monuments in Japan also, for some of these grew some relies were taken home by the conquering army. A Laxative Cough Syrup. "A cold or cough nearly always pro duces constipation-the water all runs to the eyes, nose and throat instead of passing out of the system through the liver and kidneys.
